It's no wonder the benevolent dictators of whatever country spend so much energy brainwashing the peasants with nationalist drivel, as if the act of pledging allegiance to a flag justifies murder and enslavement as long as it’s the good guys doing it.
Ze’ev Maoz like all wiser men know there is an uncertain virtue of those who govern.

Wes - the Josh Frank piece is very interesting. I hope more facts can come out on how this latest round started. Unfortunately, it usually seems that when details finally surface, so many people have been killed in the meantime that no one pays attention.

The Washington Post has a good outtake today from the new book by their Pentagon correspondent on killings by US forces in Iraq.

And yet people still believe that most governments (or at least their own) are inherently benevolent....

Jim,

There was enlightening article today on antiwar.com by Josh Frank pertaining to whether or not the Israeli soldiers captured were really on Israeli soil. http://www.antiwar.com/frank/?articleid=9401

If this is true, as the AP, Hindustan Times, et al. report, I suppose Israel is just down to the 'misery propaganda' which Professor Maoz mentions.

Beyond the veracity of the story, what's a couple of hostages/prisoners in that part of the world? It happens all the time. Goodness gracious, doesn't Israel attempt assassination sorties - either by air or land - all of the time in Gaza and the West Bank? Like Prof. Maoz, I'm not sure how two soldiers in IDF equate to four hundred lives and half-a-million refugees.
