Kamin's Third Law:

Combined total taxation from all levels of government always increases (until the government is replaced by war or revolution).

This seems to go with the size of
the lies.

There also appears to be implied in
The Big Lie argument that smaller lies,
i.e. smaller government, are what's
necessary for "reform".

Now read Kamin's Third Law again.

Ye ol' rock and a hard place rears
its ugly head.

FYI Texas Governor Bill Clements was a Republican, not a Democrat. Straight-talking Gov. Clements accurately called Jimmy Carter a "damned liar." He also didn't mince words in describing Arizona Gov. Babbitt.

I am certain of thing: people will eventually demand more from their congress men. The Bush Presidency has been the most destructive and disillusioning experience for an entire generation of Americans. Bush is like an atom bomb of idiocy that has obliterated what little of the presidency Clinton didn't destroy. And neither was he helped by an impotent, broken Senate and an indistinct House. Like Dick Nixon his only redeeming virtue will be that he restored cynicism and Humean skepticism to America. I can only conclude that Bush is the Henry VI of American politics. He is like Henry: a simple, virtuous, stupid man, dominated by his advisers and with a wife more beloved than he is. Incidentally, like Henry he started bloody wars which lasted long beyond his lifetime.
The congress that Pelosi is going to head up will be utterly schizophrenic. With Blue Dog Democrats like Rep. Tim Holden, she will not be able to pull through her totally Leftist agenda for America. We need to prepare ourselves for a weird session highlighted by a Congress willing to burn down Washington and a President willing to sell them gasoline. She has even taken the ludicrous step of "The Hundred Hours". Just as FDR had "the 100 days", she will try to push through her most devastating legislation in the first 4 days so that way we'll have to live with her dumpster babies while being unable to remove her.

George - thanks for the comments.

Yes, I hope that people learn from Bush the danger of boundless power.

I am concerned that so far, Democrats seem to have learned only the danger of permitting Republicans to have too much power.

But I been surprised before, so perhaps folks will make sounder, broader inductions in the coming weeks and months...

Excellent article, sir, as usual. I just read it at LewRockwell.com.

Even though my hopes will not come about in any meaningful sense, I still have hope that -at least- some principled, non-partisan, liberals have and are recognizing the virtues of limited government as a result of the Bush administration's destructive actions.

While mainstream conservatism has literally been butchered by Bush, there is a good (very small) subset of conservatives. I am speaking of paleoconservatives. "The American Conservative" magazine is an example of heroic and fearlessly principled conservatives. From my perspective, they are real conservatives compared to the phony neo-"conservatives". (While, in my view, some of the paleoconservatives are still too statist, they represent a lot of good values and views. And, without any doubt, they are fearlessly independent.)

So I am just hoping that a small subset of the liberal movement will start to embrace some limited government ideas. If they learn anything under the Bush administration, it should be the lesson for the need of limited government. And...

I hope that a good amount will become consistent. A lot of liberals complain abut the things that Bush has been doing, but much of Bush's actions have really been carrying on the programs of the Clinton administration. And any future administration, even if it is Democrat, will be carrying on and adding too what the Bush administration has been doing. They must see this. As you say, they must develop skepticism of government.

We must maintain skepticism of a government as well as its main propaganda tool disguising itself as an instrument of the free press, especially when one of those alleged journalists is a convicted Iran/Contra traitor named Ollie North. Maybe that's too cynical to be skeptical!

Jim: If citizens wish to retain their liberty, they cannot assume that those who seek power over them are honest.

Me: Except that most people don't want liberty anymore, or freedom. They want security and goodies, taken from their neighbors. Oh, and circuses to keep them entertained.
