It's true that the ATF has gotten no worse under Bush. But it doesn't sound as if it's gotten any better, either. I think about that every time some Republican tells me "but ya gotta vote GOP! They're the only ones who will protect our gun rights!"

Yeah. Right. Sure.

Oh well! I have a million more where that came from. To reflect on what we mean to the government, don't forget Napoleon. He shocked Metternich and Talleyrand by saying, "What do a million lives mean to me?" when debating the possibility of war. He also said "Vanity was the real reason for the revolution; liberty was the pretext" Dictators are wonderful because they reveal the absolute cruelty of politics and the fact that the winner loses all.
Here's one from Alan Keyes:"The gun control agenda is based on the view that ordinary citizens cannot be trusted to use the physical power of arms responsibly. But a people that cannot be trused with guns cannot be trusted with the much more dangerous power of self-government. The gun control agenda is thus an implicit denial of the human capacity for self-government, and is tyrannical in principle."
"Waiting periods are only a step. Registration is only a step. The prohibition of private firearms is the goal"

-Attorney General Janet Reno

It is a humdinger of a quote but I think it may be bogus.

There are several gun control quotes routinely attributed to Hitler that have turned out to be coined long after the Soviet flag was raised over Berlin.

Snopes may have the goods on this.

On the flip side - there are lots of damning Hitler quotes on other subjects that should get more attention than they have.

I think we might be in for another dark few centuries. I keep hearing all this talk of this "greedy" age and "excessive competition". America is suffering from an "epidemic" of gun violence. Well, if that is so, let's let loose with the federal troops to take guns from everybody. I found this gem of a quote:
"1935 will go down in History! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient and the world will follow our lead to the future!"
-- Adolf Hitler

Jim, you were absolutely correct when you mentioned in a previous article about discovering "how little you mean" to government agencies and bureaucrats. With the countless laws, regulations, and codes now in existence, one is always at risk of seeing his freedom and wealth suddenly vanish through the selective enforcement of some technicality. The practice of evidence tampering makes matters even worse.

Actually, I don't know that the ATF is any worse under Bush than it was under Clinton. They have been noticeably more restrained in some places than they were in the 1990s, such as in the state of Texas.
