Fin-Tastic - thanks for the kind words.

My "evolution over the years"?

If only it had not been for the interference by the parole board...

Dirk - your point on the "End of History" hokum is a bullseye. I was astounded when that doggerel swept Washington in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

And naturally, it was Washington intellectuals who sought to profit the most from the claptrap.

Tom - you could market that doll to the names of guys who donated the maximum allowable amount to the McCain campaign within 72 hours of his announcement of her as his running mate.

Mencken is right about getting it good and hard - the bizarre thing is that vast numbers of Americans seem to enjoy it. Some don't even seem to notice it.

Anyway, the Sarah Palin school girl action figure at www.herobuilders.com has given me an idea for a sure-fire money-maker - a Sarah Palin school girl inflatable doll.

An appreciation of History, for this generation is something that is being reconfigured into a kind of Readers Digest Version of Atavistic Eschatology. After all, the lead political consultant for the McCain campaign is reported to have a fondness for cage fighting. Why bother with the messy confusions of history when we can simply go straight back 6,000 years to the beginning, when children played with dinosaurs and the cave man received The Word.

Mao Zedong passed into history 32 years ago today and one can see the "change" that has occurred in that pistol-whipped nation . Seeing their change and then watching as the cheerful Bolsheviks of our own Election Season babble their fairy tales, one is quickly apprised of the news that it's only in a nation that dismisses history that a magnificently idiotic concept as "The End of History" can arise.

Nobody should shed a tear for democracy in this benighted carcass of a nation.....it is the Death of the Republic we should be mourning. We've got Democracy real good and as Mencken grinned....in November , we're going to get it "good and hard".

But Goebbels assured Germans that they had an "ennobled democracy" after Hitler's hacks passed the Enabling Act in the Reichstag.

Sad that folks have learned so little from history.

James,

Eventually, a democracy decays in what I simply call a post-democratic system. This terms covers many systems that were in many respects still democracies legally. The Third Reich is an excellent example. When exactly did it go from democracy to dictatorship? It's a process that has seen too many times.

I read this back in high school. It's still the best political book I've ever read. And it's been interesting to watch your evolution over the years. "Sometimes the threat of a noose is the best way to keep the peace." Love it!
