Bush created a powerful vacuum for a liberal presidency. I tend to think it's the end of republican presidencies. Bush trampled the Constitution, destroyed the economy and expanded the costly empire. No person could have done any worse. Bush proved any person could be president. Isn't it foolish for African/Americans to think it would be special for the next President to be black ?

Jim thinks Obama and the Iraqis could oust the US military. If it's possible then that could do it. But we are still in Japan, South Korea and West Germany (Iraq is different than the others).

Jean - Kinzer has done superb work and I'm glad his writing is getting more attention.

On the reasons for the US invasion - different advocates had different priorities. Israel was a top priority for many of the most vociferous pro-war Neocon advocates.

Tory - I think there will be continuing change in Iraq.

I think the government there is close to trying to expell the US troops - esp. the US contractors....

Jim, after reading this, I'm reminded of what Stephen Kinzer said at the FFF conference. If we hadn't overthrown the "democracy" in Iran 1953, it's quite possible that "democracy" could still be there now. Imagine it's possible to have a democractic state in the middle of Islamofascit country.
I'm beginning to believe more and more that oil was the primary reason to go in there, not the idea that the neo-cons needed a base of operations to spread "democracy". With the military overstreched as it as, and with the financial crisis looming over the horizon, we can't afford to spread "democracy", but we can afford to steal oil from Iraq.

No president can bs like the shrub.

Jimmy, how dare you reign and ring the hopes of so many freedom loving Bushian war hawks.

You may think this trivial:

"Bremer’s electoral edict also dictated that “one of every three candidates on a party’s slate must be a woman.” "

Can you imagine what they'll do to liberal female politicians if US troops ever leave ? Do you know what happens to Tories when the time is right ?

A reasonable person would expect "change" in Iraq in January, but I doubt there will be any. Many U.S. liberals voted for Bush, rather than Kerry, to keep them safe from Terrorists. Now that it's election time they're blaming the shrub for doing what they voted for him to do. Can anyone imagine Obama continuing the Bush doctrine in Iraq - I can.

Liberals will get what they wished for, one way or another.

Dirk - that is one of the fringe benefits of being in the Mountain time zone.

Hell, you think I'm gonna get turn on the TV that early to see Bush caterwaul about his latest salvation scheme?

Starting the day with a GWB Chicken Little routine would be enough to induce a cold sober hangover.

Listening to the Preidn stumble through his statement this morning, I enjoyed his assertion that the American people will be repaid for their $700 Billion bailout of the financial system when the assets we assume now presumably raise in value.

This, of course, quite unlike the billions flushed down the rathole of a "liberated Iraq"

"Let Freedom Reign"....whee doggies but we should translate that to latin , festoon it over crossed Stinger Missiles and use it as an emblem for most the Neo-Conservative Think Tanks in Washington. Then again, I have been partial to the other logo, the one where a little troll is flushing sacks of dollars down a toilet.
