The attitude towards the Census has changed in the past 30 years.

I only ran into one guy who refused to provide any answers. I'm looking for my old notes on that - he seemed like a decent fellow - I should write up that riff.

Tom, you put more thought into your Census responses than the Census Bureau does in designing its questionnaires.

I worked as a census taker in part because I wanted to good info to expose the Census Bureau. It wasn't a bad gig (compared to peach picking or digging ditches). I worked in the Ozarks, with every third person telling me how they hated the government and giving me a cold beer.

How was it being a census worker in 1980, Jim?

In 1980, I threw away the census form and a woman came to my house. As my roommate talked to her, I peered around the corner and made animal noises. She and my roommate appeared to be uncomfortable.

In 1990, I threw the form away and never heard anything more about it.

In 2000, I threw the form away and a woman came to my house. I cracked my door just wide enough to tell her I lived alone most of the time. She asked me what race I was as she looked at me. I told her the human race and she thanked me and left.

I'm contemplating throwing my 2010 census form away but I don't want them coming here. I think I may just give them the body count. Tom Knapp has suggested answering the other questions with "none of your business" - that way you aren't lying and you are answering their questions, sort of.

CSM should be congratulated for having publishing a decent op-ed - the first one in a while. Anthony Gregory had a piece about mandatory health insurance about 6 months ago. There is a bizarre article about Iran there today that seems rather dubious.
