Make All Politicians Wear Microphones All the Time

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was wearing a microphone for a TV station as he went out and talked to the common people. But he ran into one elderly ingrate who didn’t burnish his boots.
After he got back into his chauffeured car, he groused that the woman was a “bigot” and wanted to [...]

My Christian Science Monitor op-ed on the Tea Party movement is spurring some uplifting responses.
My article concluded, America needs real champions of freedom – not poorly informed Republican accomplices.” A phalanx of Tea Party activists rushed to vindicate their movement and prove me wrong.
Following is their rebuttal to the article:

‘Tea party’ activists: Do they hate liberals more than they love liberty?
A recent ‘tea party’ rally showed lots of anger toward President Obama, but little consistent support for liberty in America.

After Germany ceased exporting my favorite beer (Dinkel Acker pilsner), it was hard times. I tottered on the edge of becoming a white wine drinker.
But I recently discovered a new beer that is not quite as good but very satisfying in its own way. It is from Flying Dog - a Frederick, MD [...]

My Culpability for the Oklahoma City Bombing

I almost forgot my role in the Oklahoma City bombing.
No - I’ve never been to Oklahoma.
But a 1999 Los Angeles Times review of one of my books made similar points to what Bill Clinton made in his New York Times op-ed on Monday. The reviewer, Anthony Day, was horrified at my rejection [...]

The Slippery Definition of Extremism

Americans are once again hearing of the perils of extremism. But the definition of this offense is slippier than a politician’s campaign promise. The definition of extremism has continually been amended to permit government policies that few sober people [...]

Tax Day is a time to pause to appreciate all that Washington does for us. Here’s a piece I wrote 16 years ago. Unfortunately, few newspapers or magazines are stooping to notice the danger of the IRS’s power these days.
The article was accepted by Wall Street Journal editorial features editor Amity Shlaes, and [...]

Killing Journalists as Video Game Sport

Three cheers for Wikileaks. Their posting of a 38-minute video from an Apache helilcopter showing U.S. gunners killing two Reuters journalists (and ten other civilians) in 2007 is heroic. Naturally, the Pentagon had endlessly scorned Reuters’ Freedom of Information Act and other efforts to get the video.
The video and a transcript of [...]
