OFCCP Chief Denies Imposing Hiring Quotas
11:12 am | Uncategorized | Comments: 0
OFCCP chief Patricia Shiu responded to my attack on her agency in the Wall Street Journal. Shiu denies that the agency seeks to impose hiring quotas for the disabled. But the agency has always denied that it imposed racial and gender quotas - and federal contractors know that that is a load of [...]

My “Secret Service Experience” in Communist Romania
7:20 pm | Uncategorized | Comments: 4
My heart goes out to those Secret Service agents who got caught whoring in Colombia. Okay, that’s an overstatement. But I hear this is the kind of thorny predicament that can happen to anyone who is overpaid and possesses a top secret security clearance.
I have pretty well avoided both those albatrosses, but I [...]
Dilbert Champions Justice for Editors
2:48 pm | Uncategorized | Comments: 0
I’ve dealt with some excellent editors over the years… and then there have been the others.
The only thing that could have made this cartoon better is if there had been one more panel showing Dilbert bouncing the crumpled paper off the would-be editor’s forehead.

Tax Day: An Archaic Cartoon from the New Yorker
9:57 am | Uncategorized | Comments: 3
This 1971 New Yorker cartoon captures the essence of taxation - except that the notion of the gunman saying “I’m sorry” seems utterly out-of-date.
What would be the correct image and posture for the IRS in 2012?

The Long History of Entrapment Insanity
by James Bovard
America has seen a profusion of entrapment schemes in recent years. Many of the most high-profile domestic-terrorism cases have been ginned up by FBI agents who preyed on persons who had little competence for creating perils [...]
Our Previous Four-Star Hypocrisy in Colombia
10:31 am | Uncategorized | Comments: 2
The whoring Secret Service agents made President Obama’s visit to Colombia even more embarrassing. Prior to the G-men stiffing a hooker for her fees, the big issue at the hemispheric summit was the revolt of Latin American governments against the U.S. drug war. Much of the American media coverage on this [...]

Finally: A Latin American Revolt on the U.S. Drug War
12:11 pm | Uncategorized | Comments: 2
This weekend’s hemispheric summit in Colombia could spark an open revolt against the U.S. drug war. It is most encouraging to see Latin American leaders finally declaring their independence against this disastrous policy.

WSPD’s Brian Wilson and I had a rowdy chat today on Obama’s proposed 7% hiring quota for disabled job applicants. (More details available from the story in Monday’s Wall Street Journal).
Brian’s laugh was in fine form - as it always is on the day before his vacation starts.

The Foundation for Economic Education reposted a 1999 article I wrote for them as today’s “Timely Classic” from the Freeman archive. This article was a spinoff of Freedom in Chains: The Rise of the State and the Demise of the Citizen (St. Martin’s Press, 1999). Once more around the track:

95th Anniversary of Horrendous American Wrong Turn: World War One
12:24 pm | Uncategorized | Comments: 1
Yesterday was the 95th anniversary of President Wilson’s address to Congress calling for a declaration of war against Germany. The U.S. entry into the war opened a Pandora’s Box that still plagues America and much of the world. One of the war’s clearest lessons: Lies are lies, regardless of whether the liar promises to [...]

A Supreme Court ruling on New Deal farm policies has relevance today.

The Obama administration is relying heavily on a 1942 Supreme Court case to sway today’s justices as they consider the constitutionality of compelling Americans to buy health insurance. The 1942 ruling, in Wickard vs. [...]

James Bovard, policy advisor for The Future of Freedom Foundation says the U.S. currency “has lost 90 percent of its value” since the early 1900s when the Federal Reserve was created.
It is understandable that foreign nations are now “leery” of the dollar and are shifting away from the [...]
