<\/a>Some folks believe that the current acrimony in American politics is unprecedented. Not so. After Bush Betrayal <\/a>was published in late summer 2004, I received a torrent of emails from indignant readers via a Palgrave MacMillan blogsite. Happily, most of the commentors did not use a spellchecker.<\/p>\n

Many\u00a0 Bush supporters took the time to\u00a0explain the error of my ways, especially regarding so-called torture. Their comments restored my faith\u00a0 in deliberative democracy.\u00a0 Lew Rockwell kindly posted a roundup of these comments\u00a0at LewRockwell.com on October 12, 2004 – “Bush Supporters Vindicate the President<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

Here’s some\u00a0 of the highlights:<\/p>\n

\nyour definition of torture, a frat house hazing is torture. No one
\ncondones the humiliation that some Iraqi prisoners were subjected
\nto. But it is a mute point in contrast to, the gassing of 3000 Kurds,
\nthe summary execution video taped and aired on Iraqi television
\nby Sadam\u2019s henchmen. (Please note a documentary on Frontline PBS)
\nWhere Sadam stylized his regime after his idol Joseph Stalin, the
\nrecent beheadings of foreigners is not something new in Iraq. It
\nwas first done to the Iraqi people before the US invasion, Sadam
\nvideotaped the execution of a man and had each of his Generals put
\na symbolic bullet into the dead mans body.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0 do not know if your fear and hatred of Bush blind you or you are
\nstill smoking that stuff that makes people paranoid, and eliminates
\narticulate thought. But if you were in Sadam\u2019s Iraq and you made
\nthese accusations about Sadam that you have about President Bush.
\nYou and most of your family would have been slaughtered. But that
\nis Sadams justice, he is a very good student of Joseph Stalin. The
\ncurrent so-called insurgency in Iraq is the people who Sadam hired
\nas his personal guard. They consist of Jordanian Syrian and Arab
\nnationalities, and the caches of arms they are using are from the
\nstockpile of weapons Sadam had. Keeping this in mind there still
\nare many places the Iraqi Survey Group and the UN Weapon Inspectors
\nhave not seen. This sir is just common sense, common sense would
\nalso dictate that if there are WMD\u2019s in Iraq disclosing their existence
\nand location would place US Servicemen and the American people at
\nan even greater risk of attack.<\/p>\n

\nyou have not been smoking anything, quit and then try to think about

The\u00a0 people in the Abu Ghraig prison were there because of suspected
\ncrimes. Many were terrorists and murders from Sadaam\u2019s regime. However,
\nthe Geneva Convention says that all prisoners will be treated humanly.
\nThe fact that North Korea, North VietNam, and the radical Muslims
\nignored these rules is NOT an excuse for us to ignore them now.
\nBut to blame our president for what a few \u201cout on a limb\u201d military
\npersonel did is asinine. Of course Bush didn\u2019t know what these \u201cRambos\u201d
\nwere doing after hours. Their immediate supervisors most likely
\ndid not know until someone blew the wistle on the prisoner abuse.
\nThe people who are ultimately responsible for this behavior are
\nthe persons who commited the crimes. Some blame must also go, of
\ncourse, to the parents who failed to teach Christian morals to their
\nchildren, the military who did not stress the reasons for the Geneva
\nConvention rules, and also to the public school teachers in charge
\nof guiding young minds. Too often I hear the admonition, \u201cYou do
\nwhatever is best for you.\u201d This is liberally poured on school children
\nfrom day one in public schools. Well, humiliating, harassing and
\nfrightening past members of a system that did all of the above to
\nothers, apparantly was \u201cthe right thing\u201d for the American soldiers
\nwho chose to ignore the rules for handling prisoners. Their choice.
\nNot what our president has asked of them and of us. Sorry, I can\u2019t

Bovard,\u00a0 Just reading the short excerpts here make me sick. How dare you
\ntry to blame 9\/11 on this administration! The fact that it happened
\nwhile he was in office is coincidental and in no way reflects on
\nthis administrations focus, efforts and intent. The fact is that
\nthe US government (any administration) is forced to allocate resources
\non the most immediate issues and threats.<\/p>\n

Until\u00a0 9\/11 I\u2019m sure every administration had plans for terrorism but its
\nfocus and priority was relatively low since it was largely deemed

\nexposure I\u2019ve had to your vitriol I\u2019d classify you right there with
\nthe other flim-flam men like Roger Moore. You find an issue that
