Journalist Martin Sieff asked my views yesterday about US democracy promotion efforts such as the National Endowment for Democracy. I said that the interventions are “justified because \u2018God wants democracy to win.\u2019 The US government is simply doing God’s work \u2014 or doing what God would do if he knew as much as US government agencies.”<\/p>\n

I also commented, “”There is so much \u2018pro-democracy\u2019 flying around\u00a0at this point\u00a0\u2014 and the US government has done a very poor job of\u00a0auditing its own efforts. The US government has been heavily intervening in\u00a0foreign elections for\u00a0decades.”<\/p>\n

US government officials have no qualms about intervening in the internal affairs of other nations to try and secure the election of candidates which it ideologically supports, but the results often backfire and prove unpredictable to Washington, analysts told Sputnik.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

WASHINGTON (Sputnik)\u00a0\u2014 On Tuesday, a group of\u00a0US Senators led by\u00a0Mike Lee called on<\/a> Secretary of\u00a0State Rex Tillerson to\u00a0investigate US funding political factions within\u00a0other sovereign nations including through\u00a0a George Soros-backed organization funded by\u00a0USAID. Funds distributed through\u00a0USAID programs in\u00a0Albania and Macedonia were used to\u00a0influence party politics, media, and civil society, the lawmakers claimed in\u00a0a letter.<\/p>\n

“The US government often intervenes to\u00a0assist pro-US candidates in\u00a0winning elections, but\u00a0the victors are often not as\u00a0pliable as\u00a0the US government expects,” political commentator and author James Bovard said on\u00a0Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Bovard said this type of\u00a0activity was widespread and had been for\u00a0many years.<\/p>\n

“There is so much \u2018pro-democracy\u2019 flying around\u00a0at this point\u00a0\u2014 and the US government has done a very poor job of\u00a0auditing its own efforts. The US government has been heavily intervening in\u00a0foreign elections for\u00a0decades,” he said.<\/p>\n

Bovard said there was a widespread assumption among\u00a0US politicians and policymakers that such interventions were always justified morally as\u00a0well pragmatically.<\/p>\n

“This is justified because \u2018God wants democracy to\u00a0win.\u2019 The US government is simply doing God’s work\u00a0\u2014 or doing what God would do if he knew as\u00a0much as\u00a0US government agencies,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Executive Intelligence Review (EIR) senior editor Jeff Steinberg said that the most blatant recent example of\u00a0such activities was the toppling of\u00a0the democratically elected government of\u00a0Ukraine in\u00a02014.<\/p>\n

“Ukraine is the poster child for\u00a0these \u2018color revolution\u2019 operations funded by\u00a0both the US taxpayers and tax exempt groups like\u00a0Soros’ OSF,” Steinberg said.<\/p>\n

Steinberg recalled that Victoria Nuland, former president Barack Obama\u2019s assistant secretary of\u00a0state for\u00a0European and Eurasian affairs had openly boasted of\u00a0the active role that the US government had played in\u00a0destabilizing and then toppling the government of\u00a0President Viktor Yanukovych in\u00a0Kiev.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“Nuland bragged that the US government spent $5 billion building the \u2018democracy\u2019 movement in\u00a0Ukraine, which in\u00a0that case also involved hardcore neo-Nazis, who shot up\u00a0the Maidan and overthrew Yanukovych,” he said.<\/p>\n

Steinberg pointed out\u00a0that seeking to\u00a0topple any legitimate government was contrary to\u00a0international law.<\/p>\n

“It is criminal to\u00a0engage in\u00a0such violent regime change but\u00a0Soros and the National Endowment for\u00a0Democracy get away with\u00a0it constantly,” he concluded.<\/p>\n
