Journalist Martin Sieff<\/strong> <\/a>asked my two cents on reports that the Trump administration may indict Julian Assange. Here’s my thoughts from his article <\/a>this morning:<\/p>\n

Libertarian author and historian James Bovard told Sputnik that Assange should be praised, not prosecuted, for\u00a0the services WikiLeaks has provided.<\/p>\n

“Instead of\u00a0a criminal indictment, Assange deserves a Presidential Medal of\u00a0Freedom,” Bovard said. “He did more to\u00a0invigorate American democracy last year than\u00a0the Washington Post and the New York Times combined.”<\/p>\n

Bovard also warned that sending Assange to\u00a0prison would set a terrible precedent and would have dire implications for\u00a0the future of\u00a0freedom of\u00a0speech and open government in\u00a0the United States.<\/p>\n

“Any prosecution of\u00a0Assange would ultimately rest on\u00a0a presumed divine right for\u00a0the federal government to\u00a0deceive the American people. Assange is a heretic to\u00a0people who believe presidents have a right to\u00a0be trusted,” Bovard claimed.<\/p>\n

Trump and his top officials were now showing they were determined to\u00a0crush freedom of\u00a0the press and open scrutiny of\u00a0government as\u00a0much as\u00a0previous president Barack Obama did, Bovard noted, who focused on\u00a0prosecuting whistleblowers instead of\u00a0torturers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“The only CIA official Obama\u2019s Justice Department prosecuted for\u00a0the torture scandal was John Kiriakou, a courageous whistleblower who publicly admitted that the CIA used waterboarding,” Bovard recalled. “The torturers themselves laughed all the way to\u00a0New York publishing houses to\u00a0collect fat advances for\u00a0their memoirs.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
