Cross your country&#8217;s government and it might censor you too<\/a>.<\/h1>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"module-position-QXjZ46MF5Ms\" class=\"storytopbar-bucket story-byline-module story-story-byline-module\">\n<div class=\"asset-metabar\"><span class=\"asset-metabar-author asset-metabar-item\">by James Bovard<\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"module-position-QXjZ46Mswuw\" class=\"storytopbar-bucket piano-module story-piano-module\"><\/section>\n<section id=\"module-position-QXjZ46MQDP8\" class=\"storytopbar-bucket bounce-exchange-module story-bounce-exchange-module\"><\/section>\n<section id=\"module-position-QXjZ46Mx72g\" class=\"storytopbar-bucket google-survey-module story-google-survey-module\"><\/section>\n<div class=\"asset-double-wide double-wide p402_premium\" role=\"main\">\n<div id=\"module-position-QXjZ46VlVJs\" class=\"story-asset story-leadin-asset\">\n<h3 class=\"lead-in\">Facebook said my post&#8217;s image of a violent FBI raid &#8216;incorrectly triggered our automation tools.&#8217; But it wasn&#8217;t the first time an iconic image vanished.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\">Responding to\u00a0Russian-funded political advertisements,\u00a0Facebook chairman\u00a0Mark Zuckerberg declared\u00a0last month that \u201cwe will do our part to defend against nation states <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=10104067130714241&amp;id=4\">attempting to spread misinformation<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0But Facebook is effectively sowing disinformation by kowtowing to foreign regimes and censoring\u00a0atrocities such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/exclusive-rohingya-activists-say-facebook-silences-them\">ethnic cleansing in Myanmar.<\/a>\u00a0In the name of repressing fake news\u00a0and hate speech, Facebook is probably suppressing far more information than Americans realize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">Facebook blocked a post of mine last month for the first time since I joined it nine years ago. I was seeking to repost a blog article I had written on Janet Reno, the controversial former attorney general who died last year.\u00a0I initially thought that Facebook was having <a href=\"http:\/\/downdetector.com\/status\/facebook\">technical glitches<\/a>\u00a0(no novelty).\u00a0But I checked the page and saw the official verdict: \u201cCould not scrape URL because it has been blocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cPshaw!\u201d I said, or some other one-syllable epithet. I copied the full text of the article into a new blog post.\u00a0Instead of using\u00a0\u201cJanet Reno, Tyrant or Saint?\u201d as the core headline, I titled it: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/2017\/09\/13\/janet-reno-american-saint\/\">Janet Reno, American Saint<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0Instead of a 1993 photo of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/articles\/the-fire-that-time\/\">burning Branch Davidian compound<\/a> in Waco, Texas, I substituted an irreproachable official portrait\u00a0 of Reno.\u00a0Bingo \u2014\u00a0Facebook instantly accepted that crosspost.\u00a0I then added a preface detailing the previous blockage and explaining why I sainted Reno.\u00a0The ironic headline\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jim.bovard\/posts\/10212487588458132\">attracted far more attention<\/a>\u00a0and spurred a torrent of <a href=\"https:\/\/mises.org\/blog\/janet-reno-american-saint\">reposts by\u00a0think tanks<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationviews.org\/janet-reno-american-saint\/\">other websites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">I contacted Facebook\u2019s press office to learn why the initial post was blocked. Facebook spokeswoman Ruchika Budhraja checked into the matter and notified me that I would be permitted to post that link. &#8220;But why was it blocked?&#8221;\u00a0I replied. She responded: \u201cThere was an image in the post that incorrectly triggered our automation tools. That issue has been corrected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">So when did showing the home of more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-really-happened-at-waco\/\">70\u00a0people engulfed in flames<\/a>\u00a0after a FBI assault become beyond the pale?\u00a0Facebook presumably blocked everyone who sought to share that\u00a0image from the most vivid law enforcement debacle of the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">This was not the first time Facebook erased an iconic image that the U.S. government would be happy to see vanish. Facebook likely deleted thousands of postings of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/facebook-hate-speech-censorship-internal-documents-algorithms\">1972 photo of a young Vietnamese girl<\/a> running naked\u00a0after a U.S. plane dropped napalm on her village.\u00a0 After coming under severe criticism last year, Facebook announced that it would <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4485740\/facebook-reinstate-napalm-girl-photo\/\">no longer suppress that image<\/a>. Unfortunately, Facebook is unlikely to disclose a list of the images it bans. Because\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/how-much-us-history-do-americans-actually-know-less-you-think-180955431\/\">most Americans are clueless<\/a> about current events and recent history, they will have little idea of what vanishes into the <a href=\"https:\/\/rationalwiki.org\/wiki\/Memory_hole\">Memory Hole<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"partner-outstream\">\u00a0Zuckerberg also promised last month to continue working \u201cto ensure our community\u00a0is a <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=10104067130714241&amp;id=4\">platform for all ideas<\/a> and force for good in democracy.\u201d\u00a0But the Facebook vision of democracy does not include freedom of information.\u00a0Facebook instructs its employees that\u00a0\u201cwe will not censor content unless a nation has demonstrated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2017\/may\/22\/facebook-moderator-guidelines-extreme-content-analysis\">political will to enforce<\/a> its censorship laws.\u201d But in such cases, Facebook happily teams up with heavy-handed politicians to crush dissent and suppress heretical notions.<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u00a0In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/16\/facebook-explains-what-it-bans-and-why\/?_r=0\">Turkey, India<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/jul\/19\/facebook-pakistan-blasphemy-laws-censorship\">Pakistan<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/facebook-hate-speech-censorship-internal-documents-algorithms\">Morocco<\/a>, Facebook routinely suppresses comments from regime opponents.\u00a0Facebook\u00a0cooperates closely with the <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2016\/09\/12\/facebook-is-collaborating-with-the-israeli-government-to-determine-what-should-be-censored\/\">Israeli government<\/a>\u00a0and \u201cPalestinian groups\u00a0are blocked so often that they have their own hashtag, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/facebook-hate-speech-censorship-internal-documents-algorithms\">#FbCensorsPalestine<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In June, German police raided dozens of homes across the nation suspected of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/20\/world\/europe\/germany-36-accused-of-hateful-postings-over-social-media.html\">offensive social media postings<\/a> and \u201cconducted home searches and interrogations,\u201d according to the <em>New York Times<\/em>.\u00a0Facebook is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/facebook-hate-speech-censorship-internal-documents-algorithms\">deleting 15,000 posts a month<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/facebook-politik-und-gesellschaft\/wir-arbeiten-hart-daran-hassrede-zu-bek%C3%A4mpfen-und-haben-bereits-gro%C3%9Fe-fortschrit\/1361657510554965\/\">Germany<\/a>\u00a0but the government is threatening a $50-million-plus fine unless Facebook suppresses far more comments. Judith Bergman of the Gatestone Institute commented on the German mandate: &#8220;When employees of social media companies are appointed as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatestoneinstitute.org\/11205\/germany-official-censorship\">state&#8217;s private thought police<\/a> &#8230;\u00a0free speech becomes nothing more than a fairy tale. Or is that perhaps the point?&#8221; Other European nations are jumping on the suppression bandwagon. British Prime Minister\u00a0Theresa May last month called on Facebook\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2017\/sep\/19\/theresa-may-will-tell-internet-firms-to-tackle-extremist-content\">remove purportedly extremist content<\/a> within two hours of a government demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Facebook is\u00a0massively deleting posts\u00a0from the victims of the ongoing slaughter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/exclusive-rohingya-activists-say-facebook-silences-them\">ethnic minority Muslims<\/a> (known as Rohingya) by Myanmar&#8217;s military.\u00a0Facebook spokeswoman\u00a0Budhraja explained to <em>The Daily Beast<\/em>: \u201cWe work hard to strike the right balance between enabling expression while providing a safe and respectful experience.\u201d\u00a0 What is the \u201cright balance\u201d regarding a brutal campaign that is creating hundreds of thousands of refugees and spurring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=57490#.We-bQ0y-IUF\">denunciations all over the world<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Facebook last May announced plans to hire an\u00a0additional 3,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/05\/03\/facebook-to-hire-3000-to-review-posts-with-hate-speech-crimes-and-other-harming-posts\/\">content reviewers<\/a>\u00a0to scrutinize and delete offensive or improper postings or false information. But catch-all notions of &#8220;fake news&#8221; can abet government coverups. Condemnations of Congress\u2019 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution were often considered \u201cfake news\u201d (or communist propaganda) until Americans learned how the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fair.org\/media-beat-column\/30-year-anniversary-tonkin-gulf-lie-launched-vietnam-war\/\">Johnson administration deceived\u00a0them<\/a> into the Vietnam War.\u00a0Allegations that the feds had any role in that Waco fire were labeled <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/112975\/road-oklahoma-city-bombing\">conspiratorial nonsense<\/a> until 1999, when the Justice Department admitted that\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/US\/9908\/24\/fbi.waco\/\">FBI fired pyrotechnic devices<\/a>\u00a0into the ramshackle building before the conflagration. Assertions that foreign governments had any role in the 9\/11 attacks were summarily condemned until recent disclosures about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/09\/10\/despite-28-pages-release-saudis-911-involvement-still-buried\/\">Saudi financing<\/a> of the hijackers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Unlike its role in many foreign nations, Facebook is not functioning as an official censor in the U.S. But the company\u2019s nonchalance about engaging in the electronic equivalent of book burning abroad should spur wariness about its conduct here.\u00a0There are far too many American politicians who would be happy to browbeat Facebook into silencing their critics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><em>James Bovard,\u00a0author of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Attention-Deficit-Democracy-James-Bovard-ebook\/dp\/B00TDQ1SJO\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1509052899&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=attention+deficit+democracy\">Attention Deficit Democracy,<\/a><em>\u00a0is\u00a0a member of USA TODAY\u2019s\u00a0Board of Contributors.
