Thanksgiving travel: Trump’s holiday gift is more invasive airport security<\/a><\/h2>\n

On the campaign trail last year, Donald Trump derided the Transportation Security Administration as\u00a0a\u00a0\u201ctotal disaster<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0But his administration is making TSA more intrusive and abusive while its\u00a042,000 screeners<\/a>\u00a0remain as incompetent as ever.\u00a0New TSA screening guidelines will likely make Thanksgiving travel a disaster for legions of Americans\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0and\u00a0the worst is yet to come.<\/p>\n

Shortly after Trump\u2019s inauguration, TSA announced more “comprehensive”\u00a0pat-down procedures\u00a0which the Denver airport suggested might involve \u201cmore intimate contact<\/a> than before.\u201d TSA preemptively notified local police<\/a>\u00a0to expect potential complaints, and\u00a0plenty of travelers are howling:<\/p>\n

*Jenna McFarlane, a 56-year old teacher and graphic designer, was traveling out of Charlotte, N.C.,\u00a0in April when a TSA agent repeatedly told her \u201cto spread my legs wider\u201d and proceeded to \u201ctouch my vagina<\/a> four times with the side of her hand,\u201d as she complained to TSA afterwards.\u00a0She was selected for a vigorous patdown after an unreliable TSA test gave a false explosive alert for her carry-on baggage.<\/p>\n

*Hollywood reporter and author Sharon Waxman complained this summer about an aggressive female TSA agent who \u201cplaced both hands around my legs<\/a> and slowly\u00a0\u2014 very slowly \u2014 rubbed up and down. The touching went all the way up to my groin. My private parts were touched by the edge of her hand, twice.\u201d\u00a0The TSA agent rested her hands on Waxman\u2019s chest much longer than necessary to check for weapons. Waxman groused: \u201cThe TSA screening felt like nothing less than physical assault. If anyone other than a government officer had done anything of the kind, I would have reported it as a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

*David\u00a0Stavropolous complained that\u00a0a TSA agent doing a search at Chicago\u00a0O\u2019Hare\u00a0 airport jammed his hand into Stavropolous’\u00a0groin<\/a>\u00a0so hard that it caused bleeding and will require surgery to correct, according to Chicago’s\u00a0NBC station\u00a0and his lawsuit against TSA.<\/p>\n

But there is a ray of hope: TSA\u2019s screeners may soon lose the legal immunity that has shielded all their abuses. Federal judge\u00a0James Cacheris<\/a> okayed a lawsuit by Captain James Linlor, an airline pilot, who complained that a TSA agent at Washington Dulles International Airport\u00a0\u201crammed his hands into (his)\u00a0genitals<\/a> … and subsequently laughed.\u201d<\/p>\n

TSA asked the court to dismiss Linlor\u2019s case because, instead of suing, he could have phoned in his complaint to the TSA Contact Center.\u00a0TSA also insisted that its screener deserved legal immunity even if he did pummel Linlor\u2019s private parts. The judge scoffed at the government\u2019s inference that \u201ca reasonable federal officer would be surprised to learn that gratuitously striking an individual in the groin while searching them violates the Fourth Amendment.\u201d The case is proceeding.<\/p>\n

Federal groping-on-steroids is not making flying safer. In June, KMSP-TV in Minneapolis reported that a\u00a0TSA Headquarters Evaluation\u00a0Team succeeded 95% of the time<\/a>\u00a0in smuggling weapons and mock bombs past airport screeners. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general notified Congress that TSA screeners and equipment had recently\u00a0failed to\u00a0detect mock threats “in the ballpark” of 80%<\/a> of the time,\u00a0ABC News reported this month.\u00a0Rep. Mike Rogers,\u00a0R-Ala.,\u00a0declared that TSA is\u00a0\u201cbroken badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

TSA has never bothered examining whether its\u00a0tactics actually protect the public.\u00a0The Government Accountability Office (GAO)\u00a0reported in September that \u201cTSA does not measure deterrence<\/a> (impact) for any of its aviation security countermeasures.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Instead, the agency imposes burden after burden<\/a> upon American travelers based on hunches.<\/p>\n

Other Trump policies could soon blight millions of Americans\u2019 travel plans. Starting Jan. 22,\u00a0TSA may reject drivers\u2019 licenses<\/a> from many states\u00a0that fail to comply with the REAL ID Act of 2005 (formerly one of the\u00a0Tea Party\u2019s<\/a> most hated edicts). Travelers without passports from\u00a0New York, Michigan, Illinois<\/a> and other states\u00a0could be barred from flying domestically, according to information on a DHS website.<\/p>\n

Previous TSA intrusion \u2014\u00a0even its\u00a0strip-search scanners<\/a> \u2014\u00a0are chump change compared to the agency\u2019s next anti-privacy bombshell. The Electronic Frontier Foundation warned Nov.\u00a09 that\u00a0TSA plans to use facial recognition systems<\/a> to track travelers\u00a0through airports after extracting far more biometric data from them. Such a regime could also\u00a0easily be deployed in public places<\/a> throughout the nation.\u00a0If that happens, the feds could quickly identify every person who shows up to #Resist.<\/p>\n

If Donald Trump had to pass through a typical TSA gauntlet twice a week, the agency would not survive his Twitter onslaught.\u00a0For 16 years<\/a>, Washington bureaucrats and political appointees have promised to reform TSA so that it will cease being a farce and a menace.\u00a0After too many failed fixes, it is time to\u00a0follow the lead of Canada and European nations<\/a>\u00a0and privatize airport security.<\/p>\n
