How quickly NY Times forgets Obama’s lies and frauds<\/a><\/h1>\n

Donald Trump<\/a><\/span> has been flogging the truth and twisting facts since the day he arrived in the Oval Office<\/strong>. But anyone who expected more candor from him as president than on the campaign trail was criminally naive. The real mystery nowadays is why the media seeks to expunge the falsehoods of prior presidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump\u2019s Lies versus Obama\u2019s<\/a>\u201d was the headline in a\u00a0Sunday Review New York Times piece aiming to drive a final coffin nail into Trump\u2019s credibility. The\u00a0Times\u00a0claimed Trump has already \u201ctold nearly six times as many falsehoods as Obama did during his entire (8-year) presidency.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0columnists\u00a0seem so distraught that it is surprising the article is not in all caps.<\/p>\n

But the\u00a0Times\u2019\u00a0list of falsehoods is itself a charade with gaping Montana-sized holes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Has the\u00a0Times\u00a0forgotten about Edward Snowden? Obama responded to Snowden\u2019s stunning revelations of the National Security Agency\u2019s\u00a0vacuuming up millions of Americans\u2019 personal data\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0by going on the Jay Leno Show and proclaiming:\u00a0\u201cThere is no spying on Americans.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0But NSA\u2019s\u00a0definition of \u201cterrorist suspect\u201d was so ludicrously broad that it includes anyone \u201csearching the web for suspicious stuff<\/a>\u201d (maybe including presidential lies). Obama\u2019s verbal defenses of\u00a0NSA spying\u00a0<\/a>collapsed like a row of houses of cards.<\/p>\n

In early 2009, Obama visited Mexico and, in a spiel calling for the\u00a0renewal of the assault weapon ban<\/a>, asserted that \u201cmore than\u00a090 percent of the guns recovered in Mexico\u00a0<\/a>come from the United States.\u201d This vastly overstated the actual problem, since that statistic measured only firearms that Mexican authorities sent to the U.S. for tracing.<\/p>\n

His administration then acted as if 90\u00a0percent was a goal, not a lie, launching a secret\u00a0Fast and Furious gunwalking operation masterminded by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0agency, deluging Mexican drug gangs with high-powered weapons. At least\u00a0150 Mexicans were killed\u00a0<\/a>by guns illegally sent south of the border with Obama administration approval.<\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s animosity to the Second Amendment spurred some of his most farcical whoppers.<\/strong> In July 2016, Obama asserted: \u201cWe\u00a0flood communities with so many guns that it is easier for a teenager to buy a Glock than get his hands on a computer\u00a0or even a book.\u201d Glocks are the Lexus of handguns, and a person could buy hundreds of volumes of used books via Amazon for the price of a Glock.<\/p>\n

A year earlier, Obama bewailed \u201cneighborhoods where it\u2019s easier for you to buy a handgun and clips than it is for you to buy a fresh vegetable<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Obama never offered a single example of a locale where carrots are rarer than .38 Specials. But his false claim helped frighten clueless suburbanites to support Obama\u2019s anti-gun agenda.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Times\u00a0column lists only one Obama falsehood on the Affordable Care Act: \u201cIf you like your doctor, you’ll be\u00a0able to keep your doctor; if you like your health care plan<\/a>, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Obama\u2019s dozens of variations and recitals of this lie were disregarded. The\u00a0Times\u00a0also ignored the fact that the ObamaCare legislation was carefully crafted to con Congress and the public. As its intellectual godfather,\u00a0MIT economist Jonathan Gruber, explained<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cLack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically, that was really, really critical to get this thing to pass.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To revile Trump, the\u00a0column also struggles mightily to resurrect George W. Bush\u2019s credibility. The\u00a0Times\u00a0concedes that Bush sought to justify attacking Iraq \u201cby talking about Iraq\u2019s weapons of mass destruction, which did not exist.\u201d\u00a0This vastly understates the role of official deceit in hustling that war.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In early 2003, Bush\u2019s speeches continually warned,\u00a0\u201cIf war is forced upon\u00a0<\/a>us….\u201d There was never any truth to war being \u201cforced upon us\u201d (except by the White House) but that phrase helped Bush panic audiences still jittery after 9\/11. The Center for Public Integrity, which has won two Pulitzer Prizes, compiled a\u00a0list of 935 lies by Bush\u00a0<\/a>and his top appointees on Iraq.\u00a0Perhaps to preserve the column\u2019s lofty tone, the\u00a0Times\u00a0omitted any mention of Bush\u2019s\u00a0four years of brazenly false denials\u00a0<\/a>of\u00a0authorizing a worldwide torture regime<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Times\u2019 comparison of Trump and other presidents implies that all lies are equally damnable. The Times ignored all the Obama\u00a0false promises\u00a0<\/a>used to justify his troop surge in Afghanistan (which resulted in\u00a0more than a thousand dead American troops\u00a0<\/a>with nothing to show for the sacrifice) and\u00a0bombing Libya<\/a>\u00a0(which now has slave markets<\/a>). But killing vast numbers of human beings should require more due diligence than assertions on federal spending for peanut subsidies.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Times\u00a0asserts that Trump is seeking to \u201cto make truth irrelevant,\u201d which \u201cis extremely damaging to democracy.\u201d But democracy has also been subverted by the media\u2019s long history of ignoring or absolving presidential lies. For more than a century, the press has groveled the worst when presidents dragged the nation into the biggest perils.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s lies deserve to be exposed and condemned.<\/strong> But Bush\u2019s and Obama\u2019s lies help explain why only\u00a020 percent of Americans trusted the federal government\u00a0<\/a>at the end of Obama\u2019s reign. Pretending America recently had a Golden Age of honest politicians encourages the delusion that toppling Trump is all that is necessary to make the federal government great again.<\/p>\n
