A new report claims college students are ‘food insecure’ and starving. But better research shows they’re overweight and lazy.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Starvation might\u00a0be stalking among college students, according to shocking headlines in\u00a0Newsweek<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0elsewhere, and The<\/em>\u00a0Washington Post<\/em> warns of \u201cThe hidden crisis on college campuses<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

In reality,\u00a0last week\u2019s report from Temple University and Wisconsin HOPE Lab<\/a>\u00a0is typical of the baloney that spawns policy hysteria nowadays.<\/p>\n

Temple University\/HOPE lead\u00a0researcher\u00a0Sara Goldrick-Rab\u00a0assert that 36% of four-year college students and 42% of community college students are \u201cfood insecure\u201d \u2014 a vaporous term beloved by pro-welfare advocates.<\/p>\n

This analysis is modeled on the Department of Agriculture’s\u00a0annual Food Security survey.\u00a0USDA is\u00a0emphatic that its survey does not measure hunger<\/a>,\u00a0but that neonsize\u00a0warning sign was ignored by this study (titled \u201cStill Hungry and Homeless in College\u201d).<\/p>\n

Temple\/HOPE respondents were asked<\/a> questions such as whether they\u00a0feared \u201cfood would run out before I got money to buy more,\u201d\u00a0or \u201cDid you ever eat less than you felt you should\u00a0because there wasn’t enough money for food?\u201d\u00a0Redefining hunger as abstaining from second servings makes for a push-button crisis.<\/p>\n

The study asserts that 26% of students with a college meal plan are \u201cfood insecure.\u201d Did they oversleep and miss breakfast?<\/p>\n

Half the respondents who received\u00a0Pell grants ($26.6 billion for 7 million low-income students in 2016<\/a>)\u00a0were labeled \u201cfood insecure.\u201d<\/p>\n

This study offers no clues on what happened to that largesse\u00a0\u2014 or to the\u00a0other $100 billion in federal assistance<\/a>\u00a0provided to college students in 2016.\u00a0Apparently, no matter how many handouts government provides, students still cannot be expected or trusted to feed themselves.<\/p>\n

Some findings should have triggered the \u201cdumpster data\u201d alarm. Temple\/HOPE\u00a0\u201cfound that homosexual students were at much greater risk of basic needs insecurity than heterosexual students, but that bisexual students were at the highest risk<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0More than 10%\u00a0of the respondents from four-year colleges labeled themselves \u201cbisexual,\u201d and half of bisexual students allegedly go hungry.<\/p>\n

Are they too busy cavorting with both genders to eat, or what?\u00a0If there were\u00a0a national conspiracy to starve bisexuals, we would\u2019ve heard about it before now.<\/div>\n

College students are supposedly\u00a0three times more likely to be \u201cfood insecure\u201d<\/a> than other Americans. But the survey response rate was less than 10%, and responders were self-selected and enticed by the chance to win $100 prizes for spending a few minutes filling out an online form.<\/p>\n

Survey results were also skewed because females were far more likely to respond than males (70% vs. 27% of respondents, with 3% \u201cnon-binary\u201d), and they are more \u201cfood insecure\u201d than male students (37% vs. 28%).\u00a0But female college\u00a0students spend an average of\u00a010 hours a day on their cellphones<\/a>, according to a 2014 study.\u00a0Maybe turn off the phone and microwave some oatmeal?<\/p>\n

In lieu of this statistical charade, far more solid data exist\u00a0on college students\u2019 health and diets. Rather than being perpetually famished,\u00a070% of college students gain weight<\/a>\u00a0during their undergrad years.<\/p>\n

A 2017 Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior <\/em><\/a>report found that\u00a0during four years of college, the percentage of students overweight or obese rose from 23% to 41% \u2014 a 78% increase.<\/p>\n

And few students are svelte when they arrived on campus: High school students were\u00a030 times more likely <\/a>to be overweight than underweight, according to a study published in\u00a0Obesity Research<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It was only seven years ago that\u00a0USA TODAY\u00a0heralded a new campaign: \u201cFighting the obesity epidemic on college campuses<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Temple\/HOPE report fails to note that college nowadays is practically a part-time diversion even for full-time students. Students spend far less time studying than their predecessors \u2014\u00a0down from 24 hours a week in 1961 to 14 hours in 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Post<\/em>\u00a0noted in 2012 that \u201cthe\u00a0typical student today spends 27 hours a week in study and class time<\/a>,\u00a0roughly the same time commitment expected of students in a modern full-day kindergarten.\u201d But expecting students to use free time to get a job to feed themselves is beyond the pale.<\/p>\n

Instead, the only viable solution is a new federal assistance program. A Post<\/em>\u00a0article on the Temple\/HOPE study noted that \u201cadvocates have called on the\u00a0federal government<\/a> to provide free or reduced-cost meals at colleges, as is already done in primary and secondary\u00a0schools.\u201d\u00a0So politicians should treat adults like helpless children, no matter how old they become or how much aid they already receive?<\/p>\n

Besides, federal school meal programs have been perpetual dietary disasters,\u00a0deluging kids with excessive sugar and fat\u00a0and\u00a0spawning obesity<\/a>\u00a0across\u00a0the land.<\/p>\n

Many colleges would be wise to offer lower-price meal plans in lieu of the five-star buffets they serve. But a national goal of \u201cno college kid hungry\u201d would bloat more students at a time when obesity wreaks more havoc than a few missed meals.\u00a0In the long run, obliterating individuals\u2019 responsibility for feeding themselves is the worst possible dietary outcome.<\/p>\n
