\u00a0Spare me claims Gina Haspel will ‘speak truth to power’. Real truth-tellers go to jail.<\/a><\/h2>\n

Gina Haspel and other intelligence leaders all have shady pasts but real truth-tellers get disgraced.<\/em><\/h3>\n

In the Senate Intelligence Committee secret vote today\u00a0on whether to confirm Trump nominee Gina Haspel as chief of the CIA, she will likely\u00a0again be praised for promising to \u201cspeak truth to power<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0This has recently become one of the favorite accolades in the least trusted city in America. But will Americans be as gullible this time around?<\/p>\n

When 7-term congressman and dutiful Republican functionary Porter Goss was\u00a0nominated in 2004 to become CIA chief, Sen.\u00a0Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) endorsed him after he promised to \u201calways speak truth to power<\/a>.\u201d Fat chance: after he was confirmed, Goss speedily sent a memo to CIA employees muzzling them, declaring that their job was to “support the administration<\/a> and its policies in our work.\u201d\u00a0Goss bungled the CIA so badly that the Bush administration\u00a0heaved him out<\/a> after\u00a0less than two years on the job; Goss later\u00a0became a lobbyist for the Turkish government<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeaks truth to power\u201d had a starring role in the 2005 Senate coronation of John Negroponte<\/a>, America\u2019s first Director of National Intelligence.\u00a0While working as Reagan\u2019s ambassador to Honduras,\u00a0Negroponte perennially denied that the Honduran regime was committing vast atrocities, despite its killing of tens of thousands of its own citizens. (Honduras was aiding the Nicaraguan Contras at the time.) But that did not\u00a0deter Sen. Jay Rockefeller<\/a>,\u00a0D-W.Va., Sen.\u00a0Jon Corzine<\/a>,\u00a0D-N.J., and Sen. Mikulski\u00a0from recycling the \u201ctruth to power\u201d phrase in speeches endorsing Negroponte.<\/p>\n

When Michael Hayden<\/a> was nominated as CIA chief in 2006,\u00a0Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) vouched that Hayden\u00a0would \u201cspeak truth to power.\u201d But Hayden profoundly misled Congress regarding the CIA\u2019s torture program and his credibility was\u00a0demolished in the 2014 Senate Intelligence Committee report\u00a0on the enhanced interrogation program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From 2010 to 2016, James Clapper<\/a> served as Director of National Intelligence.\u00a0He scored a \u201cspeaks truth to power\u201d honorific when\u00a0Defense Secretary Ash Carter awarded him the Distinguished Civilian Service Medal\u00a0in 2016. He is much better known for\u00a0his false 2013 congressional testimony<\/a>\u00a0denying that the National Security Agency collected data on millions of Americans.<\/p>\n

And now it is\u00a0Gina Haspel\u2019s\u00a0turn.\u00a0The Haspel nomination is perhaps the biggest charade of the season since she, as\u00a0acting CIA chief, has discretion to determine exactly what details from her 33 year CIA career\u00a0are disclosed to Congress<\/a>. The public heard about\u00a0Haspel meeting Mother Teresa<\/a>\u00a0but details on\u00a0Haspel\u2019s linchpin role in the torture scandal<\/a> and the destruction of evidence have been sparse.<\/p>\n

Praising nominees\u2019 candor seeks to make Americans believe that honesty has a snowball\u2019s chance in hell inside the Beltway.\u00a0But people who speak truth to power tend to end up fired, exiled, or imprisoned:<\/p>\n

\u25ba\u00a0Lawrence Lindsay<\/a> was former president George W. Bush\u2019s economic advisor \u2014\u00a0until he predicted that\u00a0Bush\u2019s war on Iraq could cost $200 billion. (The actual costs of the war far\u00a0exceeded $2 trillion<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\u25ba\u00a0Eric Shinseki<\/strong> was U.S. Army chief of staff \u2014\u00a0until he\u00a0testified to Congress in 2003 that \u201cseveral hundred thousand soldiers<\/a>\u201d would be necessary to occupy Iraq after Bush invaded that nation.<\/p>\n

\u25ba\u00a0CIA\u00a0agent Valerie Plame<\/a>\u2019s career was ruined by leaks\u00a0by Bush administration officials in retaliation for her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, exposing Bush\u2019s falsehoods on the Iraqi regime\u2019s pursuit of nuclear weapons material.<\/p>\n

\u25ba\u00a0CIA agent\u00a0John Kiriakou<\/a> disclosed that the CIA was waterboarding\u00a0detainees and was prosecuted by the Obama administration Justice Department \u2014\u00a0the only CIA official to be sent to prison for the torture scandal.<\/p>\n

\u25ba\u00a0Former NSA staffer Edward Snowden<\/a> exposed a vast NSA illegal surveillance network and remains living in exile in Russia, perhaps because a top congressman and former intelligence agency\u00a0chief publicly joked about putting him a \u201ckill list.\u201d<\/p>\n

The notion that some official will stalwartly tell the truth is supposed to spur Americans\u2019 faith that Washington can be redeemed \u2014\u00a0as if\u00a0 we are only two or three nominations away from honest government.\u00a0 This is why \u201cspeaks truth to power\u201d is lathered onto almost any nominee without multiple perjury convictions.\u00a0 But it is remains the political equivalent of a used car dealer swearing a vehicle was previously owned by a grannie who only drove on Sunday afternoons.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cTruth delayed is truth defused\u201d is a much better guide on how most political appointees will behave. But, as former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg declared in a recent commencement address, \u201cWhen we tolerate dishonesty<\/a>, we get criminality.\u201d Bloomberg labeled \u201cour own willingness to tolerate dishonesty in service of party, and in pursuit of power\u201d as \u201cthe greatest threat to American democracy.\u201d Unfortunately, Bloomberg\u2019s warnings will have little or no impact on the Senate\u2019s conduct regarding Haspel or future nominees.<\/p>\n
