Do members of Congress care about any sexual assault that does not permit them to politically grandstand? Hold TSA agents responsible for assaults.<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In the uproar over Christine Blasey Ford\u2019s allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, many members of Congress declared that women have a \u201cright to be believed.\u201d\u00a0Unfortunately, Congress is ignoring\u00a0legions of women who have been sexually abused thanks to the immunity Congress provides to federal agents.\u00a0But a federal appeals court may grant relief despite Washington’s negligence.<\/p>\n

Congress gives the Transportation Security Administration\u00a0almost $8 billion a year<\/a>\u00a0and does nothing to constrain how TSA\u2019s 43,000 screeners<\/a> treat American travelers.\u00a0A\u00a0Justice Department lawyer insisted\u00a0last year that there’s no law “establishing a specific degree<\/a> of permissible intrusiveness of a (TSA)\u00a0security screening pat-down.”\u00a0Americans have no legal recourse regardless of how TSA\u2019s screeners treat them, thus explaining why TSA pat-downs\u00a0become more intrusive<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many women have shared vivid allegations of TSA abuses on Twitter:<\/p>\n

\u25baDr. Jenn<\/a>\u00a0complained on Sept.\u00a08: \u201cIs it common practice for TSA agents to forcefully slide their hand up my (15-year-old)\u00a0daughter’s inner leg and ending at her vagina? Literally slamming their hand into my daughter’s vagina.\u201d<\/p>\n

‘I was sexually assaulted by the TSA’<\/h3>\n

\u25baMelissa Emmal<\/a>, whose Twitter header page shows a banner calling for impeaching Trump, tweeted on Aug.\u00a028: \u201cA @tsa agent at DCA told me the scanner had \u2018alarmed\u2019 at my groin. She then searched me from my knee up \u2018until she met resistance\u2019 (her words). She met resistance when she made contact with my labia FOUR times (front and back pat up of each leg). Felt like a sexual assault.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25baEmily White<\/a>\u00a0complained on Aug.\u00a026: \u201cI was sexually assaulted by the @TSA on August 1 @LGAairport’s Marine Terminal at around 11:50 am. … If you don’t want your vagina paddled multiple times, I recommend avoiding that crew.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25baValerie Knees<\/a>\u00a0groused on Aug.\u00a014: \u201cWas prepared to be a beacon of light and happy airport travel person this morning. Until the @TSA needlessly felt up my labia. 19 months into Trump\u2019s presidency is apparently the length of time it takes for the government to grab my p—y.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25baDev<\/a>, a New York author, complained on Aug.\u00a08: \u201cHaving someone move their hands from your ankle all the way up until they karate chop your f—ing\u00a0vulva while your skirt is already removed is not okay. It is not casual, it is not necessary and I\u2019m going to war with the TSA and their poor training.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25baLiz Groeschen<\/a>\u00a0tweeted on July 10 that she almost missed her flight at JFK Airport\u00a0thanks to \u201can invasive hand pat-down that should be relabeled \u2018tsa\u00a0hands in your\u00a0vagina\u2019\u00a0to be completely accurate\u201d and which was \u201can\u00a0absolute embarrassment\u00a0to America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25baMarina Modela<\/a>\u00a0complained on July 9:\u00a0\u201cDear @TSA, At #seatac , 2 agents groped my labia in the name of \u2018security\u2019 and falsely accused me of having something in my pants. How does groping female genitalia promote security, especially when your agents are too incompetent to know the difference between labia and bombs?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25baElizabeth Nolan Brown<\/a>, a\u00a0Reason\u00a0magazine editor, complained on June 7: \u201cMy \u2018right groin area\u2019 was suspicious to TSA so the agent just groped my ass & ran her hands under my waistband, between my thighs and all over my crotch in the middle of the airport. \u2026 It\u2019s really unsettling to have an armed agent of the state rubbing your vulva while everyone watches.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congress must hold the TSA accountable<\/h3>\n

It gets worse. The\u00a0ACLU recently filed a complaint\u00a0charging that TSA agents took Zainab Merchant, a Harvard grad student and mother of three, to a private room and compelled her to “open\u00a0her pants” and show her bloody menstrual pad<\/a> after an enhanced pat-down.<\/p>\n

Congress has never held a hearing featuring a panel of TSA victims whose complaints against the agency are documented, captured on video, and at least momentarily legendary on social media. Nor has Congress ever required the TSA chief to attend a hearing and specifically respond to individuals his agency pointlessly traumatized.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0federal appeals court recently declared that it\u00a0falls “squarely in the realm<\/a>” of Congress\u00a0to amend federal law to curtail the blanket immunity that TSA agents enjoy. After initially effectively siding with TSA agents, the appeals court<\/a> based in Philadelphia this month agreed to\u00a0rehear a TSA\u2019s victim\u2019s\u00a0challenge that could radically reduce the amount of power that TSA screeners enjoy.<\/p>\n

Do members of Congress care about any sexual assault that does not permit them to politically grandstand? Capitol Hill\u2019s selective indignation is not worth a plug nickel as long as politicians fail to rein in federal agents. As CNN political commentator Angela Rye<\/a> wrote after her grueling experience with airport security, \u201cDear TSA: The country is not safer because you grab vaginas.\u201d<\/p>\n
