One sentence from Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty<\/strong><\/a> (St. Martin’s Press, 1994) received far more mileage than I expected. “Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner” has been translated into 48 languages<\/a>, quoted by the Hong Kong Chief Justice<\/a>, and set the theme for a series of articles last September in the New York Times<\/a> on the worldwide crisis of democracy.\u00a0 The line has also been popular among dissidents and critics in Turkey<\/a>, Pakistan<\/a>, India<\/a>, Nigeria<\/a>, Uganda<\/a>, Somalia<\/a>, Kenya<\/a>, South Africa<\/a>, Maldives<\/a>, Greece<\/a>, and even Canada<\/a> – and at least one Saudi<\/a> Twitter account. It has appeared on coffee cups and t-shirts, in an animated political history by the Cartoon Laureate of the Netherlands<\/a>, and in the Oxford Treasury of Sayings and Quotations<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 “Yahoo! Answers<\/a>” challenged readers to explain the quote three years ago.\u00a0 Thanks to everybody who helped put that epigram on the radar screen here and abroad!<\/p>\n

And then there was the Ben Franklin hoopla.\u00a0 After Lost Rights came out, someone attributed the quote to Franklin; I was subsequently accused of plagiarism ol’ Ben.\u00a0 But “lunch” was not a term used in the 1700s.\u00a0 Also, “well-armed lamb contesting the vote” is contemporary English phraseology.<\/p>\n
