The <i>New York Times<\/i> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/28\/t-magazine\/entertainment\/creative-geniuses-michelle-obama-alejandro-aravena-zadie-smith.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hailed<\/a> her as one of the \u201ccreative geniuses who defined culture in 2016\u201d and the Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/a86f03c3511a47cbbcfb1a7a8896d661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">christened<\/a> her a \u201cluminary with international influence\u201d in the same year.\u00a0 But don\u2019t expect the media to tell you that today, Ms. Obama\u2019s biggest initiative as First Lady has proven a disastrous failure.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Ms. Obama <a href=\"https:\/\/letsmove.obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launched<\/a> her \u201cLet\u2019s Move\u201d campaign for \u201csolving the problem of childhood obesity in a generation.\u201d\u00a0 She proclaimed a goal of reducing the percentage of overweight and obese children by 2.5 percent by 2015.\u00a0 She was speedily awarded sainthood for her lofty aspirations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-6678135-9\" data-google-query-id=\"COiZ1rmGousCFaNScgodhq0CxA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/3946880\/TAC_INLINE_Pos1_0__container__\">\n<div id=\"ld-dfp-ad-13045197114175078-0\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lockerdome.com\/lad\/13045197114175078?pubid=ld-dfp-ad-13045197114175078-0&amp;pubo=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theamericanconservative.com&amp;rid=&amp;width=837\" width=\"600\" height=\"175\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But, despite glowing press coverage for the \u201cLet\u2019s Move\u201d campaign, even more children are super-sizing nowadays. The percentage of overweight youth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hestat\/obesity_child_15_16\/obesity_child_15_16.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rose<\/a> from 14.9 percent in 2009-2010 to 16.6 percent in 2015-2016, while the percentage of obese youth rose from 16.9 percent to 18.5 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control. As <i>the New York Times<\/i> noted in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/20\/upshot\/childhood-obesity-research.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that the child obesity problem had stabilized were \u201can illusion. If anything, things have gotten worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The most visible legacy of \u201cLet\u2019s Move\u201d is a vast increase in the number of children consuming government-subsidized meals. Ms. Obama helped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2012\/09\/26\/school-lunch-breakfast-free\/1595979\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">push<\/a> the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act through Congress in 2010. That bill made some revisions to nutritional standards for school meals that were intensely unpopular with students (such as smaller lunch sizes and blander food). Some reforms were necessary because USDA school feeding programs have been a perpetual dietary disaster. A 2010 University of Michigan study <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21146676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">found<\/a> that low-income kids who did not eat subsidized school meals were much less likely to become fat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1572516514557-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/human-services\/healthy-hunger-free-kids-act-of-2010-summary.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act<\/a> pretended that all the dietary perils vanished when Obama signed the law. Any school with 40 percent of low-income students can now provide federally-subsidized free breakfast and lunch to all students\u2014even though most children\u2019s families would not qualify for aid.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast enrollment\u00a0 surged more than 30 percent after 2010, feeding <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/aboutschoolmeals\/schoolmealtrendsstats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">almost 15 million kids<\/a> each morning prior to the COVID school shutdowns. Ms. Obama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2010\/12\/13\/michelle_obama_on_childhood_obesity_we_cant_just_leave_it_up_to_the_parents.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">declared<\/a> in 2010 that, because children\u2019s nutrition is so important, \u201cWe can\u2019t just leave it up to the parents.\u201d But schools have a worse record of providing healthy fare than do most parents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1573040805625-0\" data-google-query-id=\"CJm617mGousCFVFkcgodY8oHhA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/63118993\/ADN_Players\/TAC_Player_0__container__\"><iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/63118993\/ADN_Players\/TAC_Player_0\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/63118993\/ADN_Players\/TAC_Player_0\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-google-container-id=\"8\" data-load-complete=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"brid-temp-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.brid.tv\/live\/partners\/12297\/snapshot\/584016.png\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s because schools offer breakfasts with \u201ccarb loading\u201d more appropriate for marathon runners than for schoolchildren. Homer Simpson is the <a href=\"https:\/\/simpsons.fandom.com\/wiki\/Donuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">patron saint of school breakfast<\/a> programs. Donuts and other high-sugar pastries have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&amp;q=school+breakfast+menu+donut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">starring role<\/a> in morning menus across the nation. USDA bans schools from serving whole milk, but approves providing chocolate skim milk\u2014even though each half pint contains almost half the daily added sugar that the American Heart Association recommends for kids. The Center for Investigative Reporting warned that \u201csugar levels in school meals are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/sdut-cir-sugar-school-lunches-no-limits-2013oct03-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than double<\/a> what is recommended for the general public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 2014 analysis by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/11\/141118072526.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a> that USDA\u2019s \u201cnew requirements do not limit the amount of added sugar in school meals\u201d and may \u201cbe perpetuating eating habits linked to obesity, diabetes and other diet-related diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To massively expand the program, the Obama administration rewarded schools that encourage all children to eat free breakfasts in the classroom (a policy championed by Ms. Obama). But breakfast in the classroom programs \u201cmay contribute to excess calorie intake,\u201d according to a 2013 <i>American Journal of Public Health<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/abs\/10.2105\/AJPH.2013.301470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> analysis<\/a>. A 2015 National Bureau of Economic Research report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w20308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">found<\/a> that providing breakfast in the classroom more than doubled \u201cthe likelihood of eating two breakfasts.\u201d That report also found no improvement in daily nutrient intake from expanded school breakfast programs.<\/p>\n<p>School officials in some areas scorned parents who protested schools feeding their kid a second breakfast and deluging them with sugary fare. What could possibly go wrong from a handout program blessed by the most revered First Lady since Eleanor Roosevelt? Plenty, according to a growing number of scientific reports. According to a 2016 study published in <i>Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics,<\/i> \u201cReceiving school breakfasts more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2212267215013805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doubled<\/a> the odds of becoming obese for children from families below the federal poverty line compared with children of similar socioeconomic backgrounds who did not regularly receive school breakfasts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The adverse impacts of school meals are compounded by another federal program that stretches American waistlines. President Obama strove to boost food stamp enrollment as rapidly as possible, and total recipients rose from 28 million in 2008 to 44 million in 2016. Walter Willett, chair of Harvard University\u2019s Department of Nutrition, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2015\/11\/patterns-of-obesity-prove-resilient\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">observed<\/a> in 2015, \u201cWe\u2019ve analyzed what [food stamp] participants are eating and it\u2019s horrible food. It\u2019s a diet designed to produce obesity and diabetes.\u201d A 2017 study published in <i>BMC Public Health<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5237482\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> found<\/a> that food stamp recipients were twice as likely to be obese as eligible non-recipients. Almost half of the women collecting food stamps are obese, according to a 2011 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/roomfordebate\/2011\/09\/27\/expand-the-use-of-food-stamps\/the-link-between-food-stamps-and-obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Obama\u2019s expansion of food stamps and other programs, federal food programs were feeding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourpursuit.com\/research\/usda-oig-overlap-and-duplication-in-food-and-nutrition-services-nutrition-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more <\/a>than 100 million Americans in 2013. The Trump administration has sought to curtail this gravy train but has faced stiff resistance in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Obama\u2019s campaign for more free kiddie meals might have made sense if most low-income children were gaunt, but overeating has long been a much greater public health peril. A 2012 <i>Journal of the American Medical Association<\/i> editorial <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/1487507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a> that\u00a0 \u201cseven times as many [low-income] children are obese as are underweight.\u201d Children in lower-income families were almost twice as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/data\/childhood.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">likely to be overweight or obese<\/a> as children from higher-income families.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Obama\u2019s \u201cgovernment knows best\u201d and \u201cgovernment feeds best\u201d recipes have been disasters for American children.\u00a0 Nothing that Ms. Obama, who now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/michelle-obama-gets-paid-a-200000-speaker-fee-2017-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">receives<\/a> up to $200,000 for each speech she gives, can say or do can compete with the trays of free donuts that schools offer to children.
