His father, who was also an American citizen, was killed two weeks earlier by another drone strike ordered by Obama.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote a piece condemning Obama&#8217;s assassination program for Christian Science Monitor in 2011,\u00a0 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Commentary\/Opinion\/2011\/0517\/Assassination-nation-Are-there-any-limits-on-President-Obama-s-license-t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assassination Nation<\/a>: Are There Any Limits on President Obama\u2019s License to Kill?\u201d I derided the Obama administration\u2019s claim that the president possessed a \u201cright to kill Americans without a trial, without notice, and without any chance for targets to legally object\u2026. Killings based solely on presidential commands radically transform the relation of the government to the citizenry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Readers responded by<a href=\"https:\/\/mises.org\/wire\/remember-when-conservatives-canceled-anyone-against-war-terror-i-do\"> <strong>calling for my assassination<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 My article mentioned an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit pressuring the Obama administration \u201cto disclose the legal standard it uses to place US citizens on government kill lists.\u201d \u201cWill R.\u201d was indignant: \u201cWe need to send Bovard and the ACLU to Iran. You shoot traders and the ACLU are a bunch of traders.\u201d (I was pretty sure the ACLU was not engaged in international commerce). \u201cJeff\u201d took the high ground: \u201cHopefully there will soon be enough to add James Bovard to the [targeted killing] list.\u201d Another commenter\u2014self-labeled as \u201cIdiot Savant\u201d\u2014saw a grand opportunity: \u201cNow if we can only convince [Obama] to use this [assassination] authority on the media, who have done more harm than any single terror target could ever dream of \u2026 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s\u00a0 riff I did on Obama&#8217;s assassination program in 2013:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The Obama administration yesterday leaked out its<a href=\"http:\/\/msnbcmedia.msn.com\/i\/msnbc\/sections\/news\/020413_DOJ_White_Paper.pdf\"><strong> confidential legal paper<\/strong><\/a> on killing Americans to NBC News. Obama&#8217;s legal wizards decided that the Fifth Amendment&#8217;s pledge that no citizen shall &#8220;be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law&#8221; is invalid in cases of imminent attack by terrorists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Though this might sound reasonable, the memo proceeds to craft a totally bogus notion of &#8220;imminent.&#8221; But, as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2013\/02\/04\/leaked-justice-department-memo-reveals-legal-case-for-targeted-killings-of-us-citizens\/\"><strong>John Glaser notes at Antiwar.com<\/strong><\/a>, &#8220;The memo refers to what it calls a \u201cbroader concept of imminence\u201d than what has traditionally been required, like actual intelligence an ongoing plot against the US. &#8216;The condition that an operational leader present an \u2018imminent\u2019 threat of violent attack against the United States does not require the United States to have clear evidence that a specific attack on U.S. persons and interests will take place in the immediate future,&#8217; the memo states, contradicting conventional international law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a January <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2017\/01\/06\/trump-must-expose-obama-power-grabs-open-the-books-james-bovard-column\/96219168\/\">2017 USA Toda<\/a>y piece<\/strong>, I urged Trump to open the files on Obama&#8217;s killings:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8220;Trump should quickly reveal the secret memos underlying Obama\u2019s <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"http:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2012\/08\/13\/targeted-killings-a-short-history\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">\u201ctargeted killing\u201d drone assassination program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Administration lawyers defeated lawsuits\u00a0by the <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-invokes-state-secrets-to-bar-cleric-lawsuit\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">ACLU<\/a>, <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/03\/us\/judge-rules-memo-on-targeted-killing-can-remain-secret.html\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>, and <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/freedom.press\/news-advocacy\/we-just-sued-the-justice-department-over-the-fbias-secret-rules-for-using-national-security-letters-on-journalists\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">others seeking disclosure of key legal papers<\/a> on how the president became judge, jury\u00a0and executioner.\u00a0A Trump administration could disclose the memos and white papers without endangering anything other than the reputation of the soon-to-be former president and his policymakers.<\/p>\n<p>Didn&#8217;t happen.\u00a0 The Trump administration could have exposed vast numbers of abuses by the Obama administration the same way that Obama (partially) opened the files on some of President George W.
