Biden\u2019s silly summit ignores a real peril to democracy: COVID crackdowns<\/a><\/h1>\n

President Joe Biden will seek to boost his sagging approval ratings this week with an international virtual summit whooping up democracy. The Treasury Department will publicize the event by slapping financial sanctions on \u201cindividuals who are engaged in malign activities<\/a> that undermine democracy and democratic institutions around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But lying, power-hungry politicians will probably not be on the target list.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The White House says the summit of more than 100 nations will focus on \u201cDefending against authoritarianism<\/a>.\u201d But Biden has no problem with the biggest authoritarian abuse of our times \u2014 the rise of Cage Keeper Democracies where citizens\u2019 ballots merely designate who will place them under house arrest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Freedom House report \u201cDemocracy under Lockdown<\/a>\u201d says \u201cthe condition of democracy and human rights has worsened in 80 countries\u201d since the pandemic\u2019s start. Last month, Sweden\u2019s International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance declared that America and other nations imposed COVID measures \u201cthat were disproportionate, illegal, indefinite or unconnected to the nature of the emergency.\u201d It warned that \u201cestablished democracies are increasingly adopting authoritarian<\/a> tactics.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Australian government has set up detention camps to lock up anyone suspected of contact with COVID-positive individuals. Austria and Germany imposed nationwide lockdowns that nullified millions of citizens\u2019 freedom of movement. When New Zealand imposed a lockdown, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern ordered her captive citizenry: \u201cDo not congregate, don\u2019t talk to your neighbors<\/a>.\u201d Britain unleashed some of the most absurd restrictions, including prohibiting couples who live in different homes from having sex indoors<\/a>. Dozens of nations have used the military to enforce COVID restrictions, heightening \u201cthe risk of unchecked excessive force and the normalization of increasingly militarized civil life<\/a> after the pandemic,\u201d the Swedish think tank reported.<\/p>\n

The COVID Iron Fist hit home for New Yorkers on Monday<\/strong> when Mayor Bill de Blasio decreed that all private-sector workers must be double-vaxxed<\/a> and even 5-year-old children must be jabbed if they want to eat at McDonald\u2019s. Blas is claiming the same dictatorial power that numerous federal judges have ruled Biden does not possess. Gov. Andrew Cuomo was equally power-crazed: Remember his order to New York sheriffs to intrude into people\u2019s homes to enforce his mask mandate<\/a> during Thanksgiving dinners last year.<\/p>\n

Governors in state after state imposed lockdowns that former Attorney General Bill Barr aptly called \u201cthe greatest intrusion on civil liberties<\/a>\u201d since slavery\u2019s end. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito lamented that the pandemic \u201chas resulted in previously unimaginable restrictions on individual liberty<\/a>.\u201d The shutdowns of businesses, schools, churches and synagogues dismally failed to prevent roughly 150 million Americans<\/a> from becoming infected with COVID.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, there is no sign Team Biden will disavow this demolition of democracy.<\/strong> The prez continues to urge businesses to pretend his vaccine mandate is still binding, despite a long string of federal-court losses. Last week, fearing that rising COVID cases will decimate his approval ratings, Biden revealed new restrictions as part of his \u201cCOVID-19 Winter Plan<\/a>.\u201d When asked whether unvaxxed Americans would be banned from domestic flights, Biden COVID Czar Jeff Zients replied, \u201cWe will continue to look at all options \u2014 everything is on<\/a> the table.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden policymakers have also considered banning all interstate<\/a> travel by the unvaxxed. They suffer from \u201ctotalitarian envy\u201d: Centers for Disease Control chief Rochelle Walensky gushed praise for the \u201creally strict lockdowns<\/a>\u201d inflicted by Communist China.<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s democracy summit will also be \u201caddressing and fighting corruption.\u201d Is this intended to add Monty Python-style comic relief to the event, considering that the invitation list includes<\/a> many of the world\u2019s most corrupt nations? Will Hunter Biden make a surprise guest appearance to offer tips on how to avoid indictment while massively profiting from insider ties? Will 10 percent of any summit proceeds be siphoned off for \u201cthe Big Guy<\/a>\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Promising to vanquish worldwide corruption is a favorite throwaway line for American politicians. In<\/strong> 2010, President Barack Obama proclaimed at the United Nations that the US government would be \u201cleading a global effort to combat corruption<\/a>.\u201d Six years later, pirouetting at an international Anti-Corruption Summit, Secretary of State John Kerry denounced corruption as \u201ca poison that erodes trust,<\/a> robs citizens of their money and their future\u00a0and stifles economic growth in the places that need it most.\u201d<\/p>\n

But pious rhetoric did not deter Team Obama from turbocharging corruption<\/a> in Afghanistan with reckless US aid, turning it into the most corrupt nation on earth and helping spur massive discontent<\/a> that led to the Taliban victory.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t expect Biden to pay heed to the rise of despotic democracies. But if ballots cannot leash winning politicians, then elections can become coffin nails for freedom.<\/strong> The State Department boasts that this week\u2019s summit will \u201cprovide a platform for leaders to announce both individual and collective commitments, reforms and initiatives to defend democracy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

As long as democracies fail to protect citizens against elected rulers who feel entitled to boundless power, international summits will only inflame the cynicism and bitterness of downtrodden citizens.<\/strong><\/p>\n
