Biden\u2019s \u2018Disinformation\u2019 czar is latest assault on free speech<\/a><\/h1>\n

Is Team Biden no longer even trying to avoid being a laughingstock? Why did Biden just appoint a champion of the Hunter Biden laptop coverup to serve as chief of his new Ministry of Truth?<\/p>\n

Department of Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced that his agency is creating a \u201cDisinformation Governance Board.\u201d Given the Biden record, it is unclear whether the new board will be fighting or promulgating \u201cdisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nina Jankowicz, the head of the new board<\/a>, is a Bryn Mawr graduate who worked for the National Democratic Institute, which is heavily funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, which spurred perennial controversy for interfering in foreign elections.<\/p>\n

In October 2020, after The New York Post exposed damning emails and other information in Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop<\/a>, Jankowicz scoffed at the laptop controversy: \u201cWe should view it as a Trump campaign product.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the final Trump-Biden debate, she tweeted, \u201cBiden notes 50 former natsec officials and 5 former CIA heads that believe the laptop is a Russian influence.\u201d Not only was that not what they said \u2014 they said it could be<\/em> a Russian plot \u2014 they offered no proof to reach that conclusion. And of course we know the Hunter laptop is real and is helping to inform a possible criminal case against the first son.<\/p>\n

Jankowicz never complained when Twitter suppressed all links to The Post articles before the 2020 election. But last week, when rumors circulated that Elon Musk might buy Twitter, she fretted to National Public Radio: \u201cI shudder to think about if free speech absolutists were taking over more platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n

That line is the Rosetta Stone for understanding the new Disinformation Governance Board. The goal is not \u201ctruth\u201d \u2014 which could arise from the clash of competing opinions. Instead, political overlords need power to exert pressure and pull to shape Americans\u2019 beliefs by discrediting, if not totally suppressing, disapproved opinions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Homeland Security hailed Jankowicz as an \u201cinformation warfare expert\u201d but that honorific doesn\u2019t indicate which side of the barricades she\u2019ll take.<\/p>\n

Will the new board condemn any articles that blame Biden (instead of Putin) for soaring inflation and ravaging average Americans? Will the board disparage any publication of new details of the bribes that Hunter Biden received from a tainted Ukrainian company<\/a> while his father was Vice President? (Maybe Jankowicz has a soft spot for Hunter because she\u2019s been a Ukrainian government consultant.) The new board is tasked to focus on \u201cirregular immigration\u201d as well as other topics. Will the board castigate any news reports on crimes committed by illegal immigrants? Will the board leak damaging information (maybe acquired by wiretaps or other dubious means) on any reporter who embarrasses the Biden administration?<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s new board is part of a concerted liberal attack on free speech.<\/p>\n

The New York Times re-sainted Obama last week as \u201can apostle of the dangers of disinformation.\u201d In a recent Chicago speech, Obama called for putting \u201cin place a combination of regulatory measures and industry norms\u201d that notifies social-media companies \u201cthat there\u2019s certain practices you engage in that we don\u2019t think are good for society.\u201d Trust Obama? When he was president, he practically demolished the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) despite boasting of running \u201cthe most transparent administration in history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Senator Hillary Clinton is hitting the same censorious theme. She tweeted last week, \u201cFor too long, tech platforms have amplified disinformation and extremism with no accountability\u201d as she called for the European Union to enact legislation widely seen as a \u201cmassive censorship scheme.\u201d Perhaps Clinton is seeking to safeguard the same lawless, imperial prerogatives of rulers that she practiced as Secretary of State, when she scorned FOIA and kept her emails secret \u2014 prior to her aides using Bleachbit to destroy laptops subpoenaed by Congress.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisinformation\u201d is often simply the lag time between the pronouncement and the debunking of government falsehoods.<\/strong> In early 2003, anyone who denied that Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction was guilty of disinformation \u2014 until after George W. Bush\u2019s Iraq invasion found no W.M.D.s. For much of last year, anyone who disputed Biden\u2019s assertion that people who get vaccines won\u2019t get COVID was guilty of disinformation \u2014 until the administration was forced to admit the president was wrong. Is the new definition of disinformation \u201canything which undermines trust in President Biden\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Federal agencies have deluged Americans with malarkey for decades. We don\u2019t need a Disinformation Czar to hector us to submit to the latest Washington catechism.<\/strong><\/p>\n
