You could be tarred as an \u201cunwitting proliferator of Russian narratives\u201d by US government scorekeepers.<\/p>\n<p>Do you support the French \u201cyellow vest\u201d anti-lockdown protests? <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/10\/twitter-censorship-is-the-modern-day-red-scare\/\">You are \u201cRussia-aligned,\u201d<\/a> according to Uncle Sam.<\/p>\n<p>Are you a Cuban immigrant to America?<\/p>\n<p>A federal contractor might try to get you banned on Twitter because you\u2019re a Hindu nationalist.<\/p>\n<p>Journalist Matt Taibbi <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1631338650901389322\">is back with perhaps the most bizarre installment<\/a> yet of the Twitter Files.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Americans\u2019 freedom of speech is increasingly endangered by a vast, federally funded Disinformation Industrial Complex.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The feds and their contractors are going on<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/19\/twitter-files-compares-maine-sen-angus-king-to-nixon\/\"> ever-more wild goose chases <\/a>to suppress any views the Washington establishment disapproves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/twitter-files-gec-new-knowledge-and\">Taibbi reveals<\/a> the \u201cdevastating secret\u201d behind the \u201csprawling complex of disinformation studies \u2018labs\u2019 at\u201d top universities: \u201cMost of these \u2018experts\u2019 know nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, President Barack Obama issued Executive Order 13721 to establish the \u201cGlobal Engagement Center\u201d to \u201ccounter the messaging and diminish the influence of international terrorist organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GEC is based in the State Department but also partners with the FBI, CIA, Department of Homeland Security, National Security Agency and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.<\/p>\n<p>What could possibly go wrong?<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading widget-heading widget-heading--underline\"><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Everything.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to GEC, \u201cAmerica\u2019s information warfare mechanism turned inward, against \u2018threats\u2019 in our own population,\u201d Taibbi writes. Disinformation became the most fashionable crusade.<\/p>\n<p>Disinformation is so perfidious that the GEC tries to keep its operations secret.<\/p>\n<p>The center has a budget of roughly $74 million and \u201creportedly gave to at least 39 different organizations, whose names were redacted\u201d in an inspector general report.<\/p>\n<p>GEC \u201cfunded a secret list of subcontractors and helped pioneer an insidious \u2014 and idiotic \u2014 new form of blacklisting,\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1631338680676671488\">Taibbi puts it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are foreign-government Twitter accounts, the same as US-government secret accounts (<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/12\/20\/twitter-dod-us-military-accounts\/\">aided by Twitter<\/a>), that are used for propaganda purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But GEC, whose motto seems to be \u201cClose enough for government work,\u201d relies on carpet-bombing vast numbers of Twitter targets in hopes of hitting the bad guys.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GEC has doubled their budget by aggressively <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1631338740487528464\">overstating threats<\/a> through unverified accusations,\u201d according to a top Twitter official.<\/p>\n<p>GEC sent Twitter a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1631338687718907904\">5,500 names<\/a> believed to be \u201cChinese . . . accounts\u201d engaged in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/03\/01\/china-warns-elon-musk-after-covid-lab-leak-comments\/\">\u201cstate-backed coordinated manipulation.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The list was so sloppy, it \u201cincluded multiple Western government accounts and at least three CNN employees based abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter Trust and Safety chief Yoel Roth scoffed at the list in an internal message: \u201cWhat a total crock.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading widget-heading widget-heading--underline\"><\/h2>\n<div class=\"story story--i-flex story--i-flex-none-lg\">\n<div class=\"story__image\"><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"postid-25830770 story__headline headline headline--xs inline-module--related-post__headline\"><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>GEC alerted Twitter to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1631338683549851658\">almost 500 accounts<\/a> as \u201cforeign\u201d disinformation on ludicrous grounds, such as the users tweeting #IraniansDebateWithBiden \u2014 including personal acquaintances of The Post\u2019s op-ed editor.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2021, a GEC contractor sent Twitter a message: \u201cHi guys. Attached you will find . . . around 40k twitter accounts that our researchers suspect are engaging in inauthentic behavior . . . and Hindu nationalism more broadly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the list was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1631338656144269315\">full of hapless Americans<\/a> with no ties to India or its politics.<\/p>\n<p>Any Twitter accounts that posted opinions concurring with Russian government positions could be presumed to be \u201cMoscow controlled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Twitter executive scorned the presumption that \u201cIf you retweet a news source linked to Russia, you become Russia-linked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>GEC relies on \u201cguilt by intellectual association\u201d to justify suppressing vast numbers of Twitter accounts suspected of being part of foreign \u201cecosystems.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A GEC chart on \u201cPillars of Russia\u2019s Disinformation and Propaganda Ecosystem\u201d asserts that \u201cweaponization of social media\u201d includes \u201cstanding campaigns to undermine faith in institutions\u201d or \u201camplification of protests or civil discord.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such blanket categories could bust many, if not most, Biden critics.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s Twitter Files is not GEC\u2019s first jaw-dropping pratfall.<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk declared that in 2020 GEC \u201cdemanded suspension of 250K accounts, including journalists and Canadian officials!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the accounts were condemned because they suggested COVID originated in a lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology \u2014 a heresy at the time. Since then, the FBI and US Department of Energy concluded the virus did originate in that lab.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GEC\u2019s efforts vivify how <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/03\/02\/innocent-americans-flagged-for-twitter-bans-report\/\">federal censorship serves political convenience<\/a>, not the truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A former intelligence source groused, \u201cAll the shit we pulled in other countries since the Cold War, some morons decided to bring home.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Twitter rebuffed many of GEC\u2019s requests to cancel accounts, but many innocent Americans were likely either silenced or tainted in the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDisinformation\u201d is often simply the lag time between the pronouncement and the debunking of government falsehoods.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taibbi laments the \u201ccollective panic over \u2018disinfo\u2019 defining this generation in much the same way the Red Scare defined the culture of the fifties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest Twitter Files is a fresh spur for Congress to take a scorched-earth approach to expose federal censorship regimes.<\/p>\n<p><em>James Bovard is the author of 10 books and a member of the USA Today Board of Contributors.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York Post, March 3, 2023 How the feds spend $74M a year to try to censor Americans by James Bovard Have you ever tweeted about Russia?
