James Comer (R-Ky.) aptly labeled COVID fraud as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/03\/02\/biden-begs-congress-for-1-6b-to-fight-100b-in-covid-fraud\/\">the greatest theft<\/a> of American taxpayer dollars in history.\u201d Congress and Presidents Donald Trump and Biden sought to spend COVID-relief money as quickly as possible while asking few if any questions.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz derided the \u201csafeguards\u201d for one of the most plundered programs: \u201cApply and sign and tell us that you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/02\/how-600-billion-was-stolen-from-the-american-people\/\">really entitled<\/a> to the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Almost $200 billion in federal unemployment benefits were swindled, delivered to practically anyone in the world who filled out a form and concocted a false name. \u201cOverseas organized crime groups flooded state unemployment systems with bogus online claims,\u201d siphoning off millions of dollars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/easy-money-how-international-scam-artists-pulled-epic-theft-covid-n1276789\">NBC News reported<\/a>. Prison inmates, drug gangs and foreign racketeers easily plundered the program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to Team Biden, federal intervention is necessary to deter state-government bureaucrats from sending unemployment benefits to Nigeria.<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading widget-heading widget-heading--underline\"><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Biden will soon propose legislative reforms to \u201crequire states to use the tools already at their disposal to identify fraud.\u201d If only Washington\u2019s Best and Brightest thought of that earlier!<\/p>\n<p>In his State of the Union Address last month, Biden promised, \u201cEvery dollar we put into fighting fraud, the taxpayer will get back at least 10 times as much.\u201d If that\u2019s the case, wouldn\u2019t fraud prosecutions pay for themselves?<\/p>\n<p>A hefty \u201cSweeping Pandemic Anti-Fraud Proposal\u201d Fact Sheet reveals ambitions for the White House:<\/p>\n<p>For a mere $1.6 billion, Team Biden would \u201cFormalize \u2018Gold Standard\u2019 meetings\u201d that bring together White House and agency officials \u201cso everyone could hear all concerns and issues at the same time, before major implementation started.\u201d Instead of a high-falutin\u2019 new initiative, why not simply guarantee fancy donuts for all attendees of those weekly meetings?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biden proposes to \u201cinvest $150 million to ensure lessons learned are applied going forward.\u201d Is that $150 million necessary because federal bureaucrats are notoriously slow learners? Does that include buying \u201cHooked on Phonics\u201d for every GS-12 in the Labor Department?<\/li>\n<li>How many times do taxpayers have to pay to end the same boondoggle? Biden is proposing major new funding to prevent unemployment fraud even though his American Rescue Plan already allocated <em>$2 billion<\/em> to curtail such abuses.<\/li>\n<li>Outlays include \u201c$246 million for tiger teams\u201d to \u201cidentify risks and implement fraud prevention solutions.\u201d Are the bureaucrats getting gold-plated tiger costumes or what?<\/li>\n<li>Biden proposes spending hundreds of millions to prevent identity theft, including creating a \u201cone-stop remediation experience for victims\u201d at the Federal Trade Commission\u2019s IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC is the same agency that promised to block robocalls with its \u201cDo Not Call\u201d list \u2014 one of the biggest flops since New Coke.<\/li>\n<li>Some Biden initiatives would cost little or nothing, such as permitting the Labor Department inspector general to \u201ceasily access multi-state data to detect instances of multi-state fraud where the same identity is inappropriately used to apply for benefits in multiple states.\u201d<br \/>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"story story--i-flex story--i-flex-none-lg\">\n<div class=\"story__image\">\u00a0There are already some excellent inspector generals and prosecutors hot on the trail of COVID fraudsters. Most of the laundry list of spending items in the White House \u201cSweeping Proposal\u201d won\u2019t cause swindlers to lose any sleep.<\/div>\n<p>The real purpose of Biden\u2019s $1.6 billion program is to convince taxpayers that Biden gives a damn about fraud. Yet, at the same time, Biden continues twisting the law to defraud taxpayers by forgiving $500 billion in federal student loans.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also failing to crack down on other programs plagued by fraud (such as federal food assistance). And the prez just nominated Julie Su to be the new Secretary of Labor \u2014 even though up <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/03\/02\/biden-begs-congress-for-1-6b-to-fight-100b-in-covid-fraud\/\">to $31 billion<\/a> in fraudulent unemployment benefits were paid when she was California\u2019s top labor official.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rather than squandering tax dollars on \u201ctiger teams\u201d and \u201c\u2018Gold Standard\u2019 meetings,\u201d the best anti-fraud measure would be a COVID truth commission (recently <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/21\/why-america-needs-a-covid-truth-commission\/\">recommended in<\/a> these pages).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Summon Trump, Biden, and a busload of lawmakers and top officials to testify under oath: Why did they approve COVID relief programs that were practically designed to maximize looting? What steps, if any, did they take to curb losses after pilfering reached epidemic levels?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The most important lesson of the pandemic: Don\u2019t trust politicians with boundless power.
