But the latest hysteria over food stamps <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/09\/28\/bidens-food-program-funding-binge-will-ensure-anti-obesity-programs-fail\/\">ignores how the program is <em>subverting <\/em>Americans\u2019 health.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, anyone who qualified for food stamps was automatically given the maximum benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals who had some income and would have collected only $23 in monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits got $281 a month.<\/p>\n<p>Congress voted in December to end the bonus benefits, but the media are acting like Ronald Reagan rose from the grave to smite food-stamp recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen states already phased out the excess benefits, and the bonus ends this month for the remaining 32 states.<\/p>\n<p>Even after the end of the bonus, food-stamp benefits are still higher than in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden issued a decree in 2021 permanently boosting food-stamp benefits by 23%. Higher benefits were justified in part, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/resource\/thrifty-food-plan-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US Department of Agriculture said<\/a>, because <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/09\/22\/bidens-hunger-hubbub-ignores-the-federal-obesity-fiasco\/\">so many food-stamp recipients are now obese <\/a>and need extra food to provide \u201csufficient energy to support current weight status.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"story story--i-flex story--i-flex-none-lg\">\n<h3 class=\"postid-25162755 story__headline headline headline--xs inline-module--related-post__headline\"><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The Government Accountability Office concluded that Biden violated federal law with that edict, since Congress has jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>But GAO has no power to make Uncle Joe obey the law.Any reduction in food stamps, however, sends the media into a panic mode.<\/p>\n<p>Food banks are citing more demand for free food, which is being trumpeted as proof of a pending catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, The Washington Post published a piece showing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2023\/03\/04\/pandemic-food-stamps-ending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mile-long line of cars<\/a> in Kentucky waiting for free food.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the vehicles were pricey late-model cars \u2014 not like the rattly old truck from \u201cThe Grapes of Wrath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, the Post hyperventilated: \u201cFrom the front to the back of the line, the sea of despair and hardship along this desolate Kentucky highway foreshadowed what may be in store for millions of Americans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Post miraculously read the minds of everyone in the mile-long queue: \u201cAll described feeling hunger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That included people smoking cigarettes while lamenting the cost of food.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/feb\/15\/snap-emergency-allotment-reduction-hungry-families\">profiled<\/a> a Battle Creek, Mich., single mother who decried the \u201chorrible timing\u201d of the benefit cut.<\/p>\n<p>She wailed that her youngest son \u201cwouldn\u2019t be able to eat two bowls of cereal every morning any more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But every student in Battle Creek Public Schools is entitled to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlecreekpublicschools.org\/about\/student-services\/food-and-nutrition\">free breakfast<\/a> and lunch. How many bowls of cereal does that kid need?<\/p>\n<p>How many journalists failed math classes in college?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/personalfinance\/2023\/02\/26\/pandemic-snap-benefits-expire-what-know\/11338744002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA Today whined<\/a>, \u201cSome seniors may feel a double whammy\u201d because \u201cafter receiving a 8.7% cost of living adjustment in January . . . some seniors already saw their SNAP benefits drop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper failed to explain how recipients are worse off despite a net increase in government benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Food banks have proliferated in recent years, but their aid doesn\u2019t always relieve the neediest.<\/p>\n<p>According to New York Post contributor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JCAndersonNYC\/status\/1632777419349164032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jason Curtis Anderson<\/a>, \u201cChurches do food drives and give people full grocery bags from Trader Joe\u2019s. Recipients take the food and sell it at the East Village thieves market, combined with things they stole from pharmacies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Measuring hunger by the demand for free food never made sense. If prostitutes offered free sex to needy men, the number of guys claiming to be sex-starved would skyrocket.<\/p>\n<p>Activists invoke federal food-security surveys to claim higher food-stamp benefits are needed.<\/p>\n<p>But those surveys mostly tabulate how many people voice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/james-bovard-how-the-feds-distort-their-food-insecurity-numbers-1409786373\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concerns about missing meals<\/a> at some future time or are unable to afford more expensive food they prefer.<\/p>\n<p>The feds choose not to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/11578\/chapter\/2#8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">measure actual hunger<\/a> so politicians can perpetually proclaim emergencies to justify more handouts.<\/p>\n<p>The latest uproar ignores how \u201cSNAP households actually spent slightly more than non-SNAP households per month on food to be eaten at home,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/poverty-studies\/are-states-cutting-food-stamps\/\">American Enterprise Institute<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Food-stamp recipients, unlike working Americans, receive automatic benefit boosts to compensate for inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Federal food assistance has been a dietary disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Food-stamp recipients are twice as likely to be obese as eligible non-recipients, according to a 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5237482\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BMC Public Health<\/a> study.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard nutrition professor Walter Willett <a href=\"http:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2015\/11\/patterns-of-obesity-prove-resilient\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">observed<\/a> in 2015, \u201cWe\u2019ve analyzed what SNAP participants are eating, and it\u2019s\u00a0horrible food.
