Or is Jamaal Bowman a liar, liar, House on fire<\/a><\/h1>\n<p>by James Bovard<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can send a man to Congress but you can\u2019t make him think,\u201d Milton Berle quipped in the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/09\/30\/rep-jamaal-bowman-pulled-fire-alarm-as-shutdown-looms\/\">Rep. Jamaal Bowman<\/a>, the socialist congressman representing The Bronx and Yonkers, is the latest political nitwit to vindicate Berle.<\/p>\n<p>In his Instagram profile, Bowman boasts that he \u201ccauses good trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He posted on X Friday: \u201cRepublican math is causing a catastrophic shutdown that will force millions of working people to go without pay or lifesaving benefits and calling it \u2018fiscal responsibility.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He condemned Republicans for being \u201cso unserious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next day, Bowman got serious by seeking to sabotage budget negotiations by pulling the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/01\/bowman-draws-skepticism-with-claims-that-fire-alarm-was-inadvertent\/\">fire alarm<\/a> in a House office building.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman\u2019s disruption occurred just as <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/09\/30\/jamaal-bowmans-stunt-is-absurd-even-for-the-democrats\/\">Democratic congressional leaders<\/a> were stalling for time.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the old question of \u201cWhy did the chicken cross the road?\u201d the new mystery is: \u201cWhy did the boneheaded congressman pull the fire alarm?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowman\u2019s chief of staff Sarah Iddrissu claimed he \u201cdid not realize he would trigger a building alarm as he was rushing to make an urgent vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Bowman thought that particular fire alarm was a decorative novelty, unconnected to any central system?<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading widget-heading widget-heading--underline\"><\/h2>\n<div class=\"story story--i-flex story--i-flex-none-sm\">\n<div class=\"story__image\"><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"postid-28945975 story__headline headline headline--xs inline-module--related-post__headline\">g<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Late Saturday, Bowman issued a statement claiming he was \u201crushing to make a vote\u201d and came to a door that would not open. \u201cI thought the alarm would open the door,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>This is malarkey.<\/p>\n<p>As Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) tweeted, \u201cWe don\u2019t have to go outside to vote. All House and Senate office buildings are connected to the Capitol with tunnels, for getting to votes quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Bowman was so dumb he didn\u2019t realize congressional office buildings are suffused with surveillance cameras to capture the perfidy of anyone who violates official rules.<\/p>\n<p>It is not as if Bowman was sent to Congress from a backwoods haystack that lacks newfangled devices such as fire alarms.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman spent 10 years as a Bronx school principal and routinely conducted fire drills for students. What would he have said if a student triggered a false fire alarm and defended himself by claiming he thought the switch would summon a magic carpet?<\/p>\n<h2>False alarm, real harm<\/h2>\n<p>Daniel McAdams, who worked a dozen years as a congressional staffer in the same building as Bowman, declared, \u201cPulling a false alarm like this with no emergency seriously puts lives in danger. There are limited exits and any panic can result in injury or worse. We had several of these alarms immediately post-9\/11 and let me tell it\u2019s no joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"story story--i-flex story--i-flex-none-sm\">\n<h3 class=\"postid-28943762 story__headline headline headline--xs inline-module--related-post__headline\"><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Theoretically, Bowman could face the same harsh penalty as Jan. 6 protesters \u2014 who have been sent to prison for years for obstructing an official proceeding.<\/p>\n<p>After the incident, Bowman spoke with Capitol Police. Was Bowman\u2019s statement videotaped? If so, can we lowly private citizens view the \u201cprogressive highlights of 2023\u201d tape?<\/p>\n<p>Or will this be another case of the Capitol Police serving as craven tools of the political elite and sweeping their abuses under a rug?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, pulling that fire alarm was a natural next step for a congressman who has always specialized in hysteria and claims he is stopping America from \u201csliding back into slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/nypost-bowman-fire-alarm-10-2-23-Front-cover.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-18673\" src=\"https:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/nypost-bowman-fire-alarm-10-2-23-Front-cover-715x800.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"715\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/nypost-bowman-fire-alarm-10-2-23-Front-cover-715x800.webp 715w, https:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/nypost-bowman-fire-alarm-10-2-23-Front-cover-134x150.webp 134w, https:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/nypost-bowman-fire-alarm-10-2-23-Front-cover.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px\" \/><\/a>Anyone who politically disagrees with Bowman is automatically a mass murderer.<\/p>\n<p>In April, he claimed reducing food-stamp benefits would be genocidal, leading to \u201cdeath for 38 million Americans.\u201d That meltdown was spurred by a congressional Republican proposal to require able-bodied adult food-stamp recipients to take a job \u2014 the worst form of tyranny.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Bowman verbally assailed Rep. Massie near the House floor, raging because Massie supports the Second Amendment. Bowman raved: \u201cLook at the data; you\u2019re not looking at any data!\u201d Nobody could look at anything while Bowman was screaming.<\/p>\n<p>What will Bowman do next? Start throwing flash-bang grenades at conservative witnesses during congressional hearings? Set his office trash can on fire to protest the lack of Republican support for a Green New Deal? Protest high interest rates by hijacking an armored Brinks truck and crashing it into the entrance of the Federal Reserve?<\/p>\n<p>Bowman sought to brush off the false alarm story Sunday: \u201cMy hope is that no one will make more of this than what it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A simple question settles the controversy: Is Bowman a fool or a liar or both? <strong>Luckily for him, there is no such thing in DC as \u201ctoo stupid to legislate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York Post, October 2, 2023 Mistake?
