Kissinger and my Interstate 81 Epiphany<\/a><\/h1>\n

Henry Kissinger died last week. \u00a0So far, I\u2019ve been handling my grief pretty well.<\/p>\n

Kissinger was the most esteemed war criminal in American history. Kissinger, who was Nixon\u2019s National Security Advisor,\u00a0 summarized Nixon\u2019s order for\u00a0 bombing Cambodia; \u201cAnything that flies on everything that moves.\u201d In a 1972 conversation captured by the secret White House taping system, Nixon told Henry Kissinger: \u201cThe only place where you and I disagree… Is with regard to the bombing. You\u2019re so goddamned concerned about the civilians and I don\u2019t give a damn. I don\u2019t care.\u201d Kissinger replied: \u201cI\u2019m concerned about the civilians because I don\u2019t want the world to be mobilized against you as a butcher.\u201d\u00a0 In a later conversation with Nixon, Kissinger boasted: \u201cOnce we\u2019ve broken the war in Vietnam… then no one will give a damn about war crimes.\u201d\u00a0 Regardless of the atrocities he spawned, Kissinger was endlessly feted by the establishment.\u00a0\u00a0 Humorous song writer Tom Lehrer aptly observed: \u201cPolitical satire became obsolete when Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kissinger accounted for one of the biggest road trip surprises I ever received, at least from the New York Times.\u00a0 On Thanksgiving Day, I was driving 300 miles back home after a visit to kinfolk in southwest Virginia.\u00a0 In the hundred mile stretch from Roanoke to Harrisonburg, there was damn little along Interstate 81 in those days.<\/p>\n

I stopped at a sprawling Sheetz gas station at the Staunton exit, \u201cstrung out from the road,\u201d as the Bob Seeger song goes.<\/p>\n

Things were looking grim for America at that time.\u00a0 George W. Bush was lying the nation into war against Iraq.\u00a0 Most newspapers had a \u201cNon-Warmongers Need Not Apply\u201d standard so my op-eds were striking out.\u00a0 I did get a hit the prior month in USA Today headlined, \u201cMoral High Ground Not Won on Battlefield<\/a>.\u201d I wrote that \u201ca desire to spread freedom does not automatically confer a license to kill.\u201d\u00a0 I warned, \u201cPerpetual war will inevitably mean perpetual repression. When Bush attacks foreign nations, his administration will also be striking against American freedoms.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Bush administration fearmongering was stampeding the media and most of the American public.\u00a0 I was astounded to hear Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney portraying Saddam as the culprit behind the 9\/11 attacks \u2013 the biggest load of crap that topped all their other shameless deceits. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld claimed to possess \u201cbulletproof\u201d evidence linking Saddam and Al Qaeda. But the \u201cbullet\u201d was so sensitive that it could never be exposed to sunlight.<\/p>\n

But there were a few rays of hope in those days.\u00a0 For instance, former Nixon administration National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger was getting hounded by protestors when he spoke in foreign nations.\u00a0 There was a growing clamor to indict him for the genocides he helped inflict on Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc.\u00a0 \u00a0Was the civilized world on the verge of taking a stand against the wrongful killing of millions of civilians?<\/p>\n

Walking around that Sheetz mini-market after getting my 32 ounce Dr. Pepper and a cheap cigar to propel me northward, I ambled by the newspaper stand and HOLY SMOKE!<\/p>\n

The New York Times had a big picture of Kissinger above the fold and his name was trumpeted in a banner headline.<\/p>\n

So that sonuvabitch was finally indicted on war crimes?!? Make my day!<\/p>\n

Then I got closer, squinted, and read the headline: \u201cPresident Names Kissinger<\/a> to Lead 9\/11 Commission.\u201d On Thanksgiving Eve, George Bush had designated Kissinger as the chairman of the new National Commission on Terrorist Attacks on the United States.<\/p>\n

At that moment, I realized that maybe George W. didn\u2019t really want the truth to come out about 9\/11.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Actually, the Bush administration had fought vociferously to block congressional proposals for any independent commission.\u00a0 And when Congress proved untamed on this issue, Bush sought to rig any investigation by appointing Kissinger as its chief.\u00a0 Kissinger was notorious for stonewalling and misleading congressional and other investigations when he worked in the Nixon and Ford administrations. What better choice than a Grand Deceiver to safeguard the storyline of Bush as America\u2019s heroic savior?<\/p>\n

But the Kissinger fix collapsed. All the 9\/11 Commission panelists were obliged to disclose the identity of any person, company, or foreign government that had paid them more than $5,000 in the prior two years.\u00a0 But Saint Henry refused to disclose the list of the foreign clients for his consulting firm.\u00a0 Some cynics suspected that Kissinger might be biased because of who poured millions of dollars into the firm\u2019s coffers.\u00a0 Bush publicly lamented the collapse of his fix, stating that Kissinger\u2019s \u201cwould have provided the insights and analysis the government needs to understand the methods of our enemies and the nature of the threats we face.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 9\/11 Commission became the Bush administration\u2019s most famous faith-based initiative.<\/strong> The commission appeared far more concerned with restoring trust in Washington than in revealing truth. Bush and Cheney were allowed to testify without a transcript and not under oath. Americans never heard what they said. Instead, the commission offered a synopsis of their comments\u2014as if it would have been impious to quote them directly. The White House was allowed to edit the final version of the commission\u2019s report before it was publicly released.\u00a0 The final report ignored 28 pages of damning evidence that congressional investigators exposed linking the Saudi government to the 9\/11 attackers \u2013 evidence that Bush suppressed to justify blaming Saddam Hussein and invading Iraq. The commission\u2019s cravenness was no surprise after its tainted launch.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kissinger was revered among those poohbahs and insiders who believe that deceiving the American people is a victimless crime.<\/strong> \u00a0The Washington Post made Kissinger a columnist despite his endless deceits.\u00a0 \u00a0Kissinger\u2019s career and prestige should permanently vaccinate Americans against trusting the Washington establishment.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Tributes to Kissinger have poured in after his death, though some have noted that \u201cantiwar\u201d activists rankled at Kissinger\u2019s death toll.\u00a0 \u00a0Some days I suspect the official scorekeepers are not on our side<\/strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
