I exchanged some email earlier today with Scott Horton over at Stress blog<\/a><\/strong>. Here’s his writeup:<\/p>\n

What the Hell is a \u201cPerson of Interest\u201d?
\n<\/strong>I first heard the phrase used by John Ashcroft in his wild unfounded accusations against Steven Hatfill in the anthrax case and here and there a couple of times since.<\/em><\/p>\n

Now Thursday\u2019s New York Times quotes a California criminal investigator as saying that they have a \u201cperson of interest\u201d in custody in the case of the arson fire set out there which killed some fire-fighters.<\/em><\/p>\n

When I get stuck on things like this, I usually turn to senior Stress blog legal correspondent, James Bovard.<\/em><\/p>\n

Me: James, help me out here buddy, \u201cperson of interest\u201d is just a made up term that doesn\u2019t exist anywhere in law, am I right?<\/em><\/p>\n

James Bovard: I think the technical translation is this: \u201cSomeone who the government wants to fuck with but doesn\u2019t have enough evidence to indict.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
