Give me liberty: America doesn\u2019t need a Trump coin \u2014 or any other presidential currency<\/a><\/h1>\n

George Washington refused to allow his image on the nation\u2019s coins because it would be too \u201cmonarchical.\u201d\u00a0But will the Trump administration rise above that old superstition with a new dollar coin featuring two portraits of President Trump?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Congress passed a law five years ago<\/a> calling for $1 coins \u201cemblematic of the United States semiquincentennial\u201d to circulate next year.\u00a0And nothing is more emblematic of our nation\u2019s history and achievements than Donald Trump\u2019s visage.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder the historic leadership of President Donald J. Trump, our nation is entering its 250th anniversary stronger, more prosperous, and better than ever before,\u201d the Treasury Department said this month.\u00a0It released a preliminary design for the Trump coin that \u201c<\/strong>reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy.”<\/p>\n

On the front of the coin, a large Trump portrait partially obscures the word \u201cLIBERTY.\u201d That\u2019s just a typo, right? Below Trump\u2019s face are the words \u201cIN GOD WE TRUST.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

At least there\u2019s no arrow pointing from \u201cGOD\u201d to Trump. If devout Trump fans seek mementos, the dollar coin will be much cheaper than the official Donald Trump \u201cGod Bless the USA Bibles\u201d he sells for $59.99.<\/p>\n

The coin\u2019s back side was inspired by last year\u2019s assassination attempt, showing Trump with a clenched fist in front of an American flag with \u201cFIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT\u201d above him.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s an iconic image, but. . .<\/p>\n

The Trump coin may violate an 1866 law that prohibits living people on American coinage.\u00a0 That law was sparked by the National Currency Bureau superintendent scandalously creating 5\u00a2 notes featuring<\/a> his own picture.\u00a0That was around the time the Treasury Department was denounced on Capitol Hill as a \u201chouse for orgies and bacchanals<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

That 1866 law was violated once before with doleful political and numismatic consequences.\u00a0In 1926, a half-dollar commemorative for the nation\u2019s 150th birthday featured George Washington and President Calvin Coolidge.\u00a0Some critics denounced the coin, but The New York Times predicted it would boost Coolidge\u2019s<\/a> re-election chances.\u00a0Yet Silent Cal was a no-show in 1928. Americans refused to pay $1 for the special 50\u00a2 pieces, and most of the coins went unsold and were melted down in 1934.<\/p>\n

A Trump dollar coin would be less vexing to Americans than the trillion-dollar coin<\/a> the Obama and Biden administrations considered minting to magically pay off federal budget deficits.\u00a0Almost all the internal documents on that coin have been effectively designated as state secrets, according to a recent massively redacted<\/a> Freedom of Information Act response.\u00a0A trillion-dollar coin would be the ultimate religious relic for Modern Monetary Theory maniacs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, a Trump coin would dovetail with the Treasury Department\u2019s perversion of American political thinking.\u00a0Our coins nowadays are little more than paeans to dead politicians<\/strong> \u2014 from Lincoln (1\u00a2), Jefferson (5\u00a2), Roosevelt (10\u00a2), Washington (25\u00a2) to Kennedy (50\u00a2).<\/p>\n

The Coinage Act of 1792 required that all United States coins have an \u201cimpression emblematic of liberty.\u201d\u00a0The US Mint last year stated federal law still requires \u201ccoins to represent the concept of liberty, but instead of a mythical figure, the presidents became that depiction.\u201d\u00a0That statement was under a head-jolting subhead: \u201cPresidents as Liberty<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Call me a relic, but I prefer how the Bill of Rights defines liberty.\u00a0<\/strong>The \u201cPresidents as Liberty\u201d reduces freedom to nothing more than foisting coins with lame designs and rapidly vanishing value onto hapless citizens.\u00a0The US dollar has lost 95%<\/a> of its purchasing power in the last century.<\/p>\n

Instead of either Trump or Trillion-Dollar Token Travesties, we should return to what the United States did best.\u00a0One hundred years ago, America had some of the world\u2019s most beautiful coinage, including a $20 gold piece designed by famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.<\/p>\n

Augustus Saint-Gaudens\u2019 $20 gold piece is one of the most beautiful examples of past American currency. US Mint<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

That coin showed Lady Liberty striding confidently forward holding symbols of peace and enlightenment, with a majestic eagle adorning the reverse side.\u00a0(Unfortunately for American liberty and coinage, President Franklin Roosevelt outlawed private ownership of gold<\/a> in 1933).\u00a0The quarter and half dollars in the 1920s, as well as the Peace Silver Dollar, also showed idealized ladies symbolizing liberty.<\/p>\n

This silver dollar remains as glorious as ever. National Museum of American Hist<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Flash back two centuries, and the 1804 Silver Dollar and other early coin designs remain as glorious as ever.<\/p>\n

To properly<\/strong> celebrate the nation\u2019s 250th birthday, our coinage should be recast with beautiful designs that incarnate the American creed that no man has a right to be enshrined above anyone else. A republic should idealize its liberty, not its leaders.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Neither Trump nor any other American president, living or dead, represents America\u2019s highest value.\u00a0<\/strong>We need the numismatic version of George Washington\u2019s 1796 Farewell Address, heeding his warning against monarchical symbols that breed docility to perfidious politicians.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
