Scott Adams, the cartoonist who gave the world Dilbert, is suffering mightily in the final throes of cancer<\/a>.\u00a0 After he departs this vale of tears, his glorious BS radar deserves to be<\/a> prominently displayed in the Smithsonian Institution. No one has a sharper ear than Adams for contemporary American bloviating.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Dilbert cartoon strip was launched in 1989 and caught fire in the 1990s. For many downtrodden office workers, posting a Dilbert cartoon in their cubicle became a tiny flag of independence.<\/p>\n

No corporate or social trend was safe from a Scott Adams smackdown.\u00a0\u201cOur company is family-friendly and very green,\u201d Dilbert\u2019s pointy-haired boss explains to a job applicant in a 2011 strip. \u201cIf I get a chance to sell your kids for a handful of carbon credits, I\u2019ll do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams has left almost no Washington sacred cow unkicked.\u00a0A 2012 cartoon caricatured the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund with Dogbert\u2019s International Bank for Bailing Out Countries That Are Bad at Math.\u00a0A Third World despot clamoring for a handout complains, \u201cOur Treasury is empty and we\u2019re not sure why.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congress has had the same problem for almost 25 straight years.<\/p>\n

Government surveillance spurred some of Adams\u2019 best smackdowns.<\/p>\n

Anyone who ever castigated TSA\u2019s whole-body scanners<\/a> will appreciate the 2016 strip in which Dilbert returns from poverty-stricken Elbonia and is told he appeared naked on TV.<\/p>\n

Why? Because \u201cthe only television show in Elbonia is a live feed from their airport full-body scanners.\u201d<\/p>\n

A 2018 strip exposed Washington\u2019s favorite scam.\u00a0Dilbert\u2019s boss explains: \u201cYour project summary needs more jargon and acronyms. The goal is to make ourselves look smart while making the readers feel dumb.\u201d\u00a0Federal agencies perpetually play that charade on slow-witted congressmen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve lambasted federal grantees for touting boneheaded \u201cgoals that look like they may have been lifted out of a Dilbert<\/a> cartoon.\u201d\u00a0A Mississippi program promised that its AmeriCorps members would perform a \u201cSelf\/diagnosis in an end-of-year survey\u201d that produced \u201ca 75% increase on average in understanding about self.\u201d Da hell?\u00a0After I swooped down to the Mississippi Delta to investigate that squirrelly claim, the chief of the program was convicted of fraud and sent<\/a> to federal prison.<\/p>\n

Shortly after President Joe Biden dictated an illegal vaccine mandate for a hundred million American adults in 2021, Dilbert featured the evil HR director Catbert notifying staffers: \u201cWhen you signed your employment documents, you agreed to let us manipulate your DNA. . . . Roll up your sleeve.\u201d\u00a0Unfortunately, voters weren\u2019t warned in 2020 that Biden would inject them with an experimental vaccine<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0(The Supreme Court struck down most of that mandate in 2022.)<\/p>\n

At his best, Adams obliterated the dogmas propagated by bootlicking Washington pundits.\u00a0<\/strong>After the Jan. 6, 2021, clash at the Capitol, Adams scoffed, \u201cWhat kind of coup takes over a few empty rooms<\/a> and controls the country? \u2018We got your empty rooms and your lectern too! Bow to us!\u2019\u201d\u00a0No wonder the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack never called Adams as a witness.<\/p>\n

In a bushel of books, Adams offers plenty of life advice for the perplexed.\u00a0In his 2013 book \u201cHow to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big<\/a>,\u201d Adams advises: \u201cIf you want success, figure out the price, then pay it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a modern version of an axiom from the Greek philosopher Epictetus that I taped to my bedroom wall 40 years ago: \u201cFirst say to yourself what you would be: then do what you have to do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Working out of my home office, I can\u2019t use Adams\u2019 surefire fix for pesky colleagues: \u201cDrape an empty gun holster over your guest chair. If anyone asks where the gun is, say, \u2018Depends. Whose side are you on?\u2019 \u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Perhaps Adams\u2019 best advice is to guard your concentration like the crown jewels.\u00a0Modern technology is one damn distraction after another: Who has not heartily cursed dings from untimely text messages?\u00a0\u201cMy morning is all about stilling the outside world so my mind can soar,\u201d Adams wrote.\u00a0There is a magic to morning lucidity that usually vanishes before high noon<\/strong>. Admittedly, I never aspired to Adams\u2019 dairy-farmer-style 5 a.m. awakenings.<\/p>\n

Adams\u2019 reputation is colored by his political zealotry; he became an avid Trump supporter in 2015.\u00a0His legacy is marred by a 2023 podcast in which he read the results of a poll that asked if it\u2019s \u201cOK to be white\u201d \u2014 53% of black respondents agreed \u2014 and urged white people \u201cto get the hell away from black people\u201d for their own safety.\u00a0After newspapers and his syndicate terminated Dilbert, Adams groused that \u201conly the dying leftist Fake<\/a> News industry canceled me.\u201d\u00a0Adams also sparked controversy by questioning the Holocaust death toll: \u201cNo reasonable person doubts that the Holocaust happened<\/a>, but wouldn\u2019t you like to know how the exact number was calculated, just for context?\u201d<\/p>\n

When Adams revealed his terminal diagnosis in May, he said he\u2019d postponed the announcement because \u201conce you go public, you\u2019re just the dying cancer<\/a> guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n
But for tens of millions of his fans, Adams will always be the guy who brightened their lives by brilliantly mocking the absurdities and indignities they faced each day.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
