Soulless censors<\/a><\/h1>\n

Vice President J.D. Vance denounced European politicians for blighting democracy with brazen censorship in a February speech in Munich. Vance warned: \u201cIf you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

European politicians were outraged because their citizens are still free to say anything their governments approve. Unfortunately, the censorship stampede accelerated after Vance\u2019s address. A slew of zombie-like politicians and zealots remain hellbent on destroying free speech in Europe and America.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Germany was the scene of some of the 20th century\u2019s worst tyranny, but today<\/a>\u2019s German leaders claim only noble intentions for oppression. Berlin\u2019s best and brightest \u201cimproved\u201d democracy by putting politicians on a legal pedestal far above the common herd. After a conservative editor mocked a top German law-enforcement official by posting a meme showing her holding an \u201cI hate freedom of opinion\u201d sign, he was convicted and sentenced to seven months in jail for \u201cabuse, slander or defamation against persons in political life.\u201d The editor is on probation while the sentence is suspended, but many other Germans have been locked up for similar offenses. German police \u201croutinely raided homes<\/a>, confiscated electronic devices, interrogated suspects and prosecuted individuals for the exercise of freedom of speech, including online,\u201d according to the US State Department human-rights report. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz personally filed almost 5,000 complaints<\/a> against his online critics, sometimes resulting in police raids against people he targeted.<\/p>\n

Britain\u2019s Online Safety Act, passed in 2018, is now a battering ram to force social-media companies to endlessly muzzle their users. Forbes reported British \u201cpolice are making more than 30 arrests a day<\/a> over what they deem to be offensive online posts, retweets or cartoons. That\u2019s 12,000 arrests a year.\u201d The government even punishes individuals guilty of \u201ccultural nationalism\u201d \u2014 defined as \u201ca belief that \u2018Western Culture\u2019 is<\/a> under threat from mass migration into Europe.\u201d Professor Yascha Mounk says it\u2019s common \u201cfor Britons to be jailed for up to six months for tweeting a stupid joke<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission president, is championing a new \u201cEuropean Democracy Shield<\/a>\u201d to provide endless pretexts to suppress ideas, people and political parties they disapprove. The Trump administration has rightly condemned the European Union\u2019s Digital Service Act as an authoritarian tool to give Euro bureaucrats<\/a> veto power over the entire internet. The EU last month hit Elon Musk\u2019s X with a<\/a> $140 million fine for alleged violations of that act.<\/p>\n

On the home front, America\u2019s champions of censorship have learned nothing and forgotten nothin<\/strong>g. Former senator Hillary Clinton still favors letting the feds prosecute Americans<\/a> who share what Washington labels \u201cdisinformation.\u201d But how can anyone trust a failed politician who claimed the \u201clesson\u201d of George Orwell\u2019s 1984<\/a> is that citizens should blindly trust their rulers?<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden\u2019s flash-in-the-pan disinformation czar, Nina Jankowicz, continues scoffing at criticisms of censorship as \u201cmodern-day McCarthyism<\/a>\u201d and a \u201cright-wing fever dream.\u201d In testimony to the British parliament<\/a>, Jankowicz, who registered as a foreign agent after losing her Team Biden gig, derided freedom of expression as the equivalent of \u201cfairy dust.\u201d Jankowicz, who touted herself as the \u201cMary Poppins of Disinformation,\u201d complained in April that the controversy resulted in her \u201cinclusion in deepfake pornography<\/a>.\u201d Did the bogus video include muzzles or blindfolds?<\/p>\n

Americans must never forget how not long ago federal agencies secretly sabotaged the First Amendment.<\/strong> Federal Judge Terry Doughty condemned the Biden censorship regime in 2023 as potentially \u201cthe most massive attack against<\/a> free speech in United States\u2019 history.\u201d Federal censorship tainted the 2020 and 2022 elections, suppressing tens of millions of tweets, YouTube videos and Facebook posts from conservatives and Republicans. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) declared, \u201cTwitter was basically an FBI<\/a> subsidiary before Elon Musk took it over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across the Western world, politicians claim they must lead a holy war against disinformation to save democracy. \u201cDisinformation\u201d is often simply the lag time between the pronouncement and the debunking of government falsehoods<\/strong>. The biggest disinformation of the pandemic was President Biden\u2019s July 2021<\/a> promise that anyone who got vaccinated would never get COVID \u2014 plus or minus 100 million cases of COVID.<\/p>\n

The crusade against disinformation is predicated on a quasi-theological view of government as the ultimate source of trut<\/strong>h. As German journalist Jasmin Kosubek observed, \u201cGermany\u2019s censorship machine creates digital \u2018priests\u2019<\/a> who claim the truth \u2014 and silence those who challenge them.\u201d In America, federal ID badges are \u201cclose enough for government work\u201d to the Oracle of Delphi. Federal agencies \u201cfound\u201d the absolute truths used to censor Americans in the Biden era simply by asking bureaucrats and \u201capparently always assumed the government official was a reliable source<\/a>,\u201d as a 2023 federal court decision noted.<\/p>\n

Censorship defines down self-government to \u201cone person, one vote, one time.\u201d Whoever wins a national election will exploit the censorship regime to perpetuate their own power.<\/strong> German politicians are conniving to outlaw the second-largest political party, the Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland, because officialdom despises its beliefs. But it wasn\u2019t AfD that caused Germans\u2019 trust in politicians and<\/a> government to plummet in recent years.<\/p>\n

Censorship is turning democracy into a parody: Voters choose politicians who then dictate what citizens are permitted to read, think and say. As censorship multiplies, vote counts merely gauge prevailing delusions among the populace and turns self-government into a charade.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his Munich speech, Vice President Vance promised that \u201cthe Trump administration will do precisely the opposite\u201d of Bidenesque and Euro-style censorship. Fulfilling that lofty standard would be a great way to honor the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n
