Will the Feds Kill Your Bank Account?<\/a><\/h1>\n

A new federal report\u00a0 confirms that the Biden administration secretly connived to destroy Americans\u2019 financial freedom. Those bureaucrats were upholding hallowed precedents stretching back to the Nixon era, when Congress passed the Bank Secrecy Act. That law made it a crime for banks to keep secrets from the government.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because Congress has designated more than 4,000 criminal offenses and federal regulatory agencies have greatly expanded prohibitions through interpretation and rulemaking, bureaucracies have broad discretion to target whatever they choose. The Debanking Review by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency\u00a0(OCC<\/span><\/a>) examined a hundred thousand complaints regarding nine of the nation\u2019s largest banks. Federal pressure led to banks cutting off companies due to \u2018reputational risk\u201d or potential embarrassment to bankers, leading to companies getting penalized for their religious or political views. The New York Post<\/em> noted that the report detailed how \u201cbanks targeted Christian organizations over abortion, LGBTQ issues<\/span><\/a>, and traditional family values.\u201d<\/p>\n

The OCC found that banks \u201cmaintained public and nonpublic policies restricting certain industry sectors\u2019 access to financial services,\u201d including \u201coil and gas exploration, coal mining or coal-powered plants, firearms or ammunition manufacturing or distribution,\u201d and more. Yahoo Finance noted, \u201cOne bank-owned processor closed a merchant\u2019s account selling Trump-branded merchandise. Another bank declined to provide services to an educational organization because its political arm endorsed only Democratic candidates.\u201d Banks routinely relied on the Southern Poverty Law Center<\/strong> (SPLC) lists to judge private organizations, regardless of SPLC\u2019s endless scandals.<\/p>\n

The OCC report details how the feds\u2019 secret arm-twisting led to banks demonizing <\/span><\/a>guns: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral banks restricted financing to firearms manufacturers or retailers, including those offering assault- or military-style weapons for civilian use. Others included certain firearms accessories. At least two banks highlighted \u201cpolarizing\u201d or \u201cpolarized\u201d public opinion surrounding individual gun ownership rights and gun control as part of the basis for their firearms restrictions. Another bank noted that \u201can association with certain [f]irearms [m]anufacturers and [r]etailers could result in significant [f]ranchise risk, particularly when those firearms are associated with civilian gun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Comptroller of the Currency Jonathan Gould declared<\/span><\/a>: \u201cToday\u2019s report provides irrefutable evidence that the nation\u2019s largest banks have denied, debanked and discriminated against customers and lawful businesses. Americans should have access to financial services regardless of their beliefs, affiliations, or political views.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new OCC report confirms key points from a House Financial Services Committee report last December. \u201cOperation Choke Point 2.0: Biden\u2019s Debanking of Digital Assets\u201d detailed how federal bureaucrats connived to \u201cpush entities involved in the digital asset ecosystem out of the U.S. financial system.\u201d The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) hammered banks to \u201cpause all crypto asset-related activity\u201d\u2014i.e., freeze or terminate the accounts of companies involved in crypto transactions.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is like a bad horror show that gets repeated at least once a decade. During the Barack Obama administration, the FDIC and the Justice Department launched the original Operation Choke Point, supposedly to \u201cchoke\u201d illegal businesses\u2019 access to financial services. But the target list was stretched to include attempts to destroy financial access for porn stars, coin dealers, online tobacco companies, and other targets.<\/p>\n

Federal threats swayed banks to blindside thousands of their business customers.<\/strong> Cigar sellers and manufacturers were clobbered as collateral victims. A Daily Beast story headlined \u201cThe Banks\u2019 War on Porn\u201d reported that \u201chundreds of current and former porn stars\u201d received \u201ccurt letters of account termination without further explanation\u201d from their banks. A top FDIC official insisted that the agency\u2019s letters to Congress on the crackdown \u201calways mention pornography when discussing payday lenders and other industries, in an effort to convey a \u2018good picture regarding the unsavory nature of the businesses at issue,\u2019\u201d according to a 2014 congressional report.<\/p>\n

For some federal regulators and prosecutors, guns were even worse than smut. T<\/strong>he FDIC notified banks to \u201c\u2018prohibit\u2019 payment processing for firearms merchants\u201d and described \u201cloans to firearms dealers as \u2018undesirable,\u2019\u201d according to the congressional report. Banks were advised by one private regulatory compliance service: \u201cArms and Ammunition Dealers are identified as higher risk businesses because they have a higher risk of being associated with terrorism and terrorist acts.\u201d The National Rifle Association complained that banks were \u201crefusing to do business with legitimate law-abiding companies in the firearm industry\u2026without regard to the specific company\u2019s credit, criminal or financial history.\u201d Hundreds of firearms and ammo companies saw their bank accounts frozen or terminated. Representative Sean Duffy (R-WI) complained that federal officials were \u201cweaponizing government to meet their ideological beliefs.\u201d Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) declared, \u201cUnelected bureaucrats at the Department of Justice, the FDIC and other agencies set out to kill legal businesses by starving them of access to financial institutions.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Emails from FDIC officials showed they were \u201cscheming to influence banks\u2019 decisions on who to do business\u2026[to ensure] banks \u2018get the message\u2019 about the businesses the regulators don\u2019t like, and pressuring banks to cut credit or close those accounts, effectively discouraging entire industries,\u201d according to the Daily Signal. Former FDIC chief William Isaac said, \u201cBankers are being cowed into submission by an oppressive regulatory regime.\u201d American Bankers Association president Frank Keating complained, \u201cThe government is compelling banks to deny service to unpopular but perfectly legal industries by threatening penalties.\u201d Operation Choke Point was terminated by the first Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Idiocy is no impediment for federal policymakers. Aside from torpedoing bank accounts, the Deep State spurs depraved financial surveillance.<\/strong> The Biden administration viewed purchasing a Bible<\/span><\/a> as a potential terrorist warning sign. Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, revealed in 2024 that the Treasury Department\u2019s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network stretched its \u201csuspicious behavior\u201d definition to include purchasing a Bass Pro Shop hat, as well as items sold by Cabela\u2019s and Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods. If you bought a gun or ammo between 2021 and 2024, Team Biden bureaucrats may have automatically classified you as a \u201cpotential active shooter.\u201d Or maybe your plane ticket purchases triggered the latest \u201clone actor\/homegrown violent extremism\u201d indicators.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Still waiting for confirmation on the secret official warning designation for individuals who peruse libertarian websites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The OCC report is a breath of fresh air but Americans would be chumps to believe the peril has been vanquished. Legions of laws and regulations remain on the books that could permit federal agencies to deny due process to any business or industry politicians choose to scourge.
