So I’m going to the Hoover Institution reception in Washington tonight.\u00a0\u00a0 Hoover’s Christmas card this year featured a picture of the medal that President Bush awarded them in November.\u00a0\u00a0 The reception should be double knee deep in\u00a0True Believers and NeoConservatives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Luckily, people generally have\u00a0low fashion expectations of freelance writers.\u00a0\u00a0 I’ll wear\u00a0 a coat and tie – I expect that will do no permanent damage.<\/p>\n

But the quandary is: what lapel pin should I wear?<\/p>\n

I could wear my old hand-me-down\u00a0Boy Scout pin.\u00a0\u00a0Problem is – there might be other people there sporting Boy Scout lapel pins.\u00a0\u00a0And I\u00a0recall Maureen Dowd’s recent piece\u00a0about how traumatized Laura Bush\u00a0was when she wore the same $8,000 “unique”\u00a0dress that\u00a03 other women donned at some recent event.<\/p>\n

If I don’t go with the Boy Scout lapel pin, the only other option is the pin\u00a0 Al Jazeera gave me after they interviewed me in London last May.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I think it has some Arabic words on it – not sure, since my Arabic is even worse than my French.<\/p>\n

Who knows?\u00a0\u00a0Wearing an Al Jazeera lapel pin to a DC conservative gig could be a good icebreaker and spark some lively conversations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
