The guidelines will lengthen to five years \u2014 from 180 days \u2014 the center\u2019s ability to retain private information about Americans when there is no suspicion that they are tied to terrorism, intelligence officials said. The guidelines are also expected to result in the center making more copies of entire databases and \u201cdata-mining them\u201d \u2014 using complex algorithms to search for patterns that could indicate a threat \u2014 than it currently does. <\/p>\n
The changes, described by senior intelligence officials on Thursday, are intended to allow analysts to more quickly identify suspicious people and activities. But they are also likely to set off concerns about Americans\u2019 privacy. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n
