{"id":48,"date":"2006-02-05T19:58:45","date_gmt":"2006-02-06T00:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/2006\/02\/05\/bush-now-entitled-to-kill-at-home\/"},"modified":"2006-02-05T20:47:49","modified_gmt":"2006-02-06T01:47:49","slug":"bush-now-entitled-to-kill-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/2006\/02\/05\/bush-now-entitled-to-kill-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Bush Now Entitled to Kill at Home?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Trebuchet MS\" size=\"3\">The February 13 issue of <em>Newsweek<\/em> reveals that President Bush is entitled to order killings here in the United States, the same as he has been doing around the globe for the last few years. <em>Newsweek<\/em> notes that, &#8220;Steven Bradbury, acting head of the Justice department&#8217;s Office of Legal Counsel [the office which in 2002 promulgated a presidential right to torture], went to a closed-door Senate intelligence committee meeting last week&#8230;&#8221; Bradbury was asked by Sen. Dianne Feinstein &#8211; &#8220;could Bush order the killing of a Qaeda suspect known to be on U.S. soil? Bradbury replied that he believed Bush could indeed do this, at least in certain circumstances.&#8221;When <em>Newsweek<\/em> contacted the Justice Department for comments on this new doctrine, Justice Department spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos stressed that Bradbury\u2019s comments occurred during an &#8220;off-the-record briefing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, any Bush-ordered killings within the United States would also presumably be off-the-record.<\/p>\n<p>This has me sufficiently concerned that I may stop taking Arabic lessons.
