Every time I see those cans advertised, I am reminded of my father&#8217;s favorite poem.<\/p>\n<p>My father<a href=\"http:\/\/lib.dr.iastate.edu\/rtd\/2811\/\"> worked on farms for most of his life<\/a>, including two summers during high school on a Pennsylvania dairy farm.\u00a0 He was proud that he had &#8220;improved&#8221; the farm&#8217;s operation by starting the milking half an hour earlier at 4:30 a.m.\u00a0 I was always mystified why he thought that was a virtue, since I am\u00a0a sloth until sunrise.\u00a0 Maybe he read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/20203\/20203-h\/20203-h.htm\">Ben Franklin&#8217;s autobiography <\/a>once too often (&#8220;early to rise makes a man&#8230;). \u00a0But\u00a0his experience dodging cow hooves before daylight gave him a healthy appreciation for the alternative.<\/p>\n<p>He often told folks about how the Carnation Milk company sponsored a contest in 1946 for a jingle for their evaporated milk.\u00a0 The winning entry purportedly came from a Nebraska\u00a0farm wife:<\/p>\n<p>Carnation milk, best in the land.<br \/>\nComes to the table in a little red can.<br \/>\nNo teats to pull, no shit to pitch.<br \/>\nJust punch a hole in the sonofabitch.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one version of\u00a0how the<a href=\"http:\/\/venturegalleries.com\/blog\/the-bawdy-ballad-of-carnation-milk\/\"> jingle came to be written<\/a>. (Several different versions of the jingle are floating around the Internet.) And here is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/business\/deals\/carnation.asp\">Snopes.com page <\/a>casting doubt on the\u00a0story.\u00a0But\u00a0it made a great story regardless and\u00a0my father always grinned ear to ear when he recited the jingle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the time of year when folks use sweetened condensed milk for pumpkin pie, peanut butter fudge, and many other holiday treats.
