{"id":8501,"date":"2015-06-22T10:00:07","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T14:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/?p=8501"},"modified":"2024-09-11T21:07:34","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T01:07:34","slug":"germany-should-release-courageous-al-jazeera-journalist-ahmed-mansour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/22\/germany-should-release-courageous-al-jazeera-journalist-ahmed-mansour\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany Should Release Courageous Al Jazeera Journalist Ahmed Mansour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/22\/world\/europe\/al-jazeera-journalist-ahmed-mansour-arrest-warrant-berlin-egypt.html?emc=edit_tnt_20150622&amp;nlid=3265312&amp;tntemail0=y&amp;_r=0\">German government <\/a>seized one of Al Jazeera&#8217;s best known and most courageous journalists, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ahmed_Mansour_(journalist)\">Ahmed Mansour<\/a>,\u00a0this weekend at the behest of the Egyptian government.\u00a0 Al Jazeera has done some of the best work of any media organization in the world exposing the abuses and oppression of the Egyptian government.\u00a0\u00a0It is appalling that a western government would even consider becoming complicit in Egypt&#8217;s growing tyranny.<\/p>\n<p>Mansour was the only journalist who remained in Fallujah in April 2004 when the Bush administration determined to brutally punish that city after four Blackwater security guards were killed there. Mansour continued broadcasting despite the demands by the U.S. military that he exit the locale.\u00a0\u00a0 His reports showed that the U.S. bombing campaign was inflicting far more damage on civilians and the city than the U.S. government admitted. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld denounced his reporting as &#8220;vicious and inaccurate.&#8221; Mansour wrote a book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Inside-Fallujah-The-Unembedded-Story\/dp\/1566567785\">Inside Fallujah: An Unembedded Narrative<\/a> &#8211; about his experience during that clash. (He has written at least 16 other books.)\u00a0 Here is a confidential U.S. government report on its <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/wiki\/Classified_U.S_report_into_the_Fallujah_assult\">Fallujah debacle<\/a> released by Wikileaks.\u00a0 The U.S. military had previously <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2005\/11\/29\/al_jazeera_in_the_crosshairs_did\">bombed Al Jazeera&#8217;s office<\/a> in Iraq, killing at least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/humanrights\/2013\/04\/2013481202781452.html\">one journalist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0had dinner with Mansour a\u00a0couple times when I was in\u00a0London in 2006 for an <a href=\"http:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/27\/al-jazeera-interview-transcript-now-online\/\">hour-long interview on his talk show <\/a>&#8211; the most popular program on Al Jazeera with 25 million live viewers.\u00a0Every place we went in London,\u00a0 he was enthusiastically greeted by people who recognized him (OK, we were going to Arabic restaurants, but&#8230;). If my memory serves, Ahmed had been\u00a0previously violently attacked\u00a0when he was reporting\u00a0in Egypt\u00a0during the Mubarak reign.\u00a0Here is a link to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.net\/programs\/withoutbounds\/2006\/5\/21\/%d9%85%d8%b3%d8%aa%d9%82%d8%a8%d9%84-%d8%a5%d8%af%d8%a7%d8%b1%d8%a9-%d8%a8%d9%88%d8%b4-%d9%88%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%ad%d8%b2%d8%a8-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%ac%d9%85%d9%87%d9%88%d8%b1%d9%8a\">video of that interview and an Arabic transcript<\/a>. (I have not been able to track down an English translation.)<\/p>\n<p>Egypt recently issued an arrest warrant claiming that Mansour &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/22\/world\/europe\/al-jazeera-journalist-ahmed-mansour-arrest-warrant-berlin-egypt.html?emc=edit_tnt_20150622&amp;nlid=3265312&amp;tntemail0=y&amp;_r=0\">tortured an unidentified lawyer<\/a> in Tahrir Square during the uprising against President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.&#8221;\u00a0 The fact that the warrant does not even bother naming that the person that Mansour purportedly tortured should have been sufficient to get it laughed out of any respectable courtroom.\u00a0 Germany is considering turning Mansour over to the Egyptian government to face the trumped-up charge.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian regime &#8211; which came to power after overthrowing an elected ruler &#8211; has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2015\/06\/01\/egyptgermany-press-al-sisi-rights-violations\">proven its contempt for both law and decency<\/a> many times.\u00a0 The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/22\/world\/europe\/al-jazeera-journalist-ahmed-mansour-arrest-warrant-berlin-egypt.html?emc=edit_tnt_20150622&amp;nlid=3265312&amp;tntemail0=y&amp;_r=0\"> New York Times <\/a>notes, &#8220;Mr. Sisi\u2019s government and its supporters, on the other hand, have talked about Al Jazeera as if it were a terrorist organization seeking to bring down the government.&#8221; Al Jazeera has shown far more courage in exposing Egyptian government atrocities than has the Obama administration or the U.S. State Department.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the type of shameless persecution sanctified by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/25\/world\/middleeast\/529-egyptians-sentenced-to-death-in-killing-of-a-police-officer.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;smid=tw-nytimes\">Egyptian government&#8217;s legal shams<\/a>: &#8220;A criminal court here sentenced 529 people to death on Monday after a single session of their mass trial, convicting them of murder for the killing of a police officer in the city of Minya during riots after the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, state media reported. The swift conviction of so many in one stroke was a sudden acceleration of the sweeping crackdown against Mr. Morsi\u2019s Islamist supporters and against other dissenters that has unfolded since his removal last summer.\u201d (That ruling made it appear that the Egyptian government had <a href=\"http:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/24\/egypt-adapt-fbiwaco-model-justice\/\">adapted the FBI\/Waco model <\/a>of justice.)<\/p>\n<p>If Germany sends Mansour to Egypt, it would be akin to western governments rounding up escaped Soviet dissidents in the 1970s and sending them back to Moscow.\u00a0\u00a0In 2011, Al Jazeera broadcast comments by a 23-year-old female protestor <a href=\"http:\/\/jimbovard.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/02\/egyptian-heroine-we-do-not-trust-a-govt-that-sends-thugs-to-kill-us\/\">Salma Al-tasi in Tahil Square<\/a>: <strong>\u201cWe do not trust a government that sends thugs to kill us<\/strong>.\u201d And what sort of government rounds up journalists abroad and sends them to a regime that wants to kill them?<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: The German government just announced Mansour&#8217;s release.\u00a0 But it is an outrageous that he was ever detained at the behest of the Egyptian government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The German government seized one of Al Jazeera&#8217;s best known and most courageous journalists, Ahmed Mansour,\u00a0this weekend at the behest of the Egyptian government.\u00a0 Al Jazeera has done some of the best work of any media organization in the world exposing the abuses and oppression of the Egyptian government.\u00a0\u00a0It is appalling that a western [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[621,622,464,293,118,129,252],"class_list":["post-8501","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-ahmed-mansour","tag-al-jazeera","tag-atrocities","tag-egypt","tag-germany","tag-journalism","tag-tyranny"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
