Oreo closure proof of losing Trump trade policy<\/a><\/h1>\n

Trump’s ‘fair trade’ would deliver more ‘winners’ like sugar industry while American workers suffer.<\/h4>\n

Presidential front-runner Donald Trump vows that he will “never eat another Oreo again<\/a>” to protest the transfer of 600 cookie-making jobs from Chicago to Mexico. And Trump is 100% correct when he condemns the factory\u2019s exodus: “It\u2019s unfair to us.<\/a>”<\/p>\n

But the villains who have destroyed the jobs of American workers are Congress and the Department of Agriculture, not Nabisco and free trade. It is the very\u00a0protectionist policies The Donald advocates to help American industry “win” again that caused\u00a0the Oreo job losses he decries.\u00a0Federal policy has long kept the U.S. price of sugar at\u00a0double or triple<\/a>\u00a0that found in the world market.\u00a0Food manufacturers such as\u00a0Nabisco are hostage to a Byzantine combination of price supports and arbitrary import restrictions that make producing candy and other sweets far more expensive here than in Canada or Mexico.<\/p>\n

Federal sugar policy costs consumers $3 billion a year<\/a>\u00a0in a failed effort to save the jobs of sugar growers even as the number of such farmers has declined <\/a>by almost 50% in recent decades.<\/p>\n

That’s bad enough, but sugar policy is one of Uncle Sam\u2019s most successful job destroyers. The Commerce Department estimated<\/a>\u00a0a decade ago\u00a0that “for each one sugar growing and harvesting job saved through high U.S. sugar prices, nearly three confectionery manufacturing jobs are lost.”\u00a0Since 1997, sugar policy has zapped more than 120,000 jobs in food manufacturing, according to a study by Agralytica<\/a>, an economic consulting firm.\u00a0More than 10\u00a0jobs<\/a> have been lost in manufacturing for every remaining sugar grower in the United States.<\/p>\n

Our Trumpian sugar policy has been an obvious\u00a0failure since the 1980s. Fifteen\u00a0years ago, there was a brief uproar when Brach’s Confections<\/a>\u00a0announced it would close\u00a0its Chicago factory and move\u00a0much of the production to Mexico.\u00a0In 2002, Life Savers closed its Michigan<\/a> factory and moved to Canada.\u00a0Hershey’s<\/a>\u00a0has also closed U.S. facilities and moved jobs abroad.\u00a0Sugar prices were the culprit in each case.<\/p>\n

Why would the feds continue a protection policy crushing American manufacturing? Campaign contributions. The sugar lobby showers Congress with money, including almost $50 million in campaign contributions and lobbying<\/a> between 2008 and 2013 alone.\u00a0In return, congressmen have licensed sugar growers to\u00a0pilfer consumers at grocery checkouts and rob hardworking Americans of their jobs.<\/p>\n

Our failed sugar policy illustrates why politicians\u00a0cannot make trade more fair<\/a> by making it less free. The economic arguments offered for sugar protectionism, like most trade barriers, are merely camouflage for political plunder. Every time Trump tries to save an American job through protectionism, he will make some Americans poorer at the same time that\u00a0he puts even more jobs at risk.<\/p>\n
