Fashion Quandary for Conservative Event
11:53 am | Bovard | wool | Comments: 24
So I’m going to the Hoover Institution reception in Washington tonight. Hoover’s Christmas card this year featured a picture of the medal that President Bush awarded them in November. The reception should be double knee deep in True Believers and NeoConservatives.
Luckily, people generally have low fashion expectations of freelance writers. I’ll wear a coat and tie - [...]

My Favorite Liberal Review of Freedom in Chains

I appreciate the feedback on the National Review’s take on Freedom in Chains that I posted yesterday.
Here is my favorite liberal review of the book. (For the record, I have never even been to Oklahoma City).

Bush Speechwriter View on Freedom, 1999
5:24 pm | Bovard | Comments: 13
I quoted the National Review’s review of Freedom in Chains (1999) in a blog comment earlier today. Someone requested the full text of the review, so here it is.
Matthew Scully, the reviewer, was on Bush’s speechwriting team for most of George W.’s first term.

Will Grigg, the editor of Pro Libertate, has a new e-zine. Will ran a piece of mine in his initial issue. Will does great work - I hope people check out his hot new ‘Net publication here.

Another Shocker from Ohio
1:56 pm | Bovard | Comments: 14
Maybe the mayor’s spokesman thought he was living in Beaver Falls, Ohio, not Toledo.
WSPD talk show host Brian Wilson and Toledo mayor spokesman Brian Schwartz had a rematch yesterday, this time at the Press Club of Toledo. The issue was the city government’s violation of the First Amendment when it barred WSPD reporters from local government functions.
The Toledo [...]

Iran, Bush, and Velvet Revolution.us

The above ad is from VelvetRevolution.us. I snapped this photo of their Republican fashion statement at the antiwar demonstration in DC on January 27. (Full size photo is available here.)
VelvetRevolution has another advertisement out proclaiming:
WAR CRIMINALS GET HANGED
Who is willing to hang beside George Bush?
The ad features a picture of Saddam getting noosed. It states:
Saddam Hussein and [...]

Democracy versus Liberty
2:13 pm | Attention Deficit Democracy | Bovard | Bush | Elective Dictatorship | Comments: 22
Even with George W. Bush as president, democracy does not guarantee liberty. Here is a piece I wrote for the Freeman on the topic last summer (now online here in PDF). The editor of the Freeman, Sheldon Richman, has one of the best freedom blogs on the Net; his “Free Association” is here.
If you enjoy the [...]

Bush Brings Medieval Justice to America
11:59 am | Attention Deficit Democracy | Bovard | Bush | Torture | dictatorship | Comments: 12
The Bush administration has been shockingly clear regarding its intentions to medievalize American justice. The memos vindicating torture written by high-ranking Bush administration officials should have woken up all Americans to the rising peril. Unfortunately, the memos have gotten far less attention than they deserve.
This article, posted today by the Future of Freedom Foundation, ran in [...]

Killer Cops Next to DC

The #2 Homeland Security official for Prince George’s County, Maryland recently shot two furniture delivery guys who brought a new bed to his house. The headboard had a scratch, according to local news reports. Since one of the delivery guys died a few days ago, the story won’t vanish, regardless of how many times the local government [...]

Antiwar.com columnist Scott Horton interviwed me today for an hour about Attention Deficit Democracy. We had a good ol’ time - I hope folks get lots of laughs from the show. Scott, who has done some excellent writing on the danger of war with Iran, had excellent observations on the latest developments in the Middle [...]
