Shutdown Bonanza: Plunging Trust in Government

The government shutdown sometimes looked like nothing more than a gambit to give a paid vacation to federal employees. However, a new poll shows that “Just 19% say that they trust the government in Washington to do what is right just about always or most of the time, down seven points since January.”

Here’s the historical trendline on trust in government from the Pew Research Center –

trust in govt poll 10-18-2013-1

Is this the start of a great new Political Enlightenment?

Probably not, but I’m trying to think positive.

I’m not sure I understand what “doing the right thing” means. I trust that the government will do what serve’s the government’s interest nearly 100% of the time and I trust that the government will do what is in the average person’s interest 0% of the time.

So, if doing the right thing is the same as doing the right thing to further the ruling elite’s agenda, I have complete faith that the government will attempt to do the right thing every time. When they fail to actually further that agenda, it is because of incompetence and not because they didn’t try.

It seems that actions taken by politicians that produce horrendous results for ordinary people most likely produced exactly the results hoped for by the politicians.

I think you’re right about lots of the politicians.

But I think that some of them simply don’t “intend” consequences – the same way that a drunk doesn’t “intend” to shoot cows when he gets all liquored up during deer hunting season. (“I jes figured since it was moving it musta been a deer, huh right?”)

Re: “…trust the government in Washington to do what is right…”

As Bill ‘Porch Dog” Clinton would say: “It depends on what the definition of “right” is…

History and semantics would suggest Government ALWAYS does the “right” thing.
If I may be so crass as to quote myself:

“Government in any form is Force; Force is the antithesis of Freedom and, therefore, immoral. Full grown, Force is War, war against countries, people, drugs, -isms and ultimately, the individual. Government fulfills its mission by perfecting efficient tactics of War with guns and regulations to extirpate Freedom, to deny every individual their inalienable rights, not “preserve and protect” them. It looked good on paper but it’s contrary to the nature of Government.” (Anarchyville Horror”- http://brianwilsonspeaks.blogspot.com/)

From that perspective, Government is doing one helluva job.
