2:34 pm | Attention Deficit Democracy | Bovard | Surveillance | Comments: 4

from today’s lead Wall Street Journal editorial:

From the Baltimore Sun
Surveillance of financial transactions goes too far
By James Bovard
June 28, 2006
The Bush administration admitted that it was conducting warrantless surveillance of the financial transactions of Americans and others only after newspapers exposed the program. According to some Republicans, the solution is to imprison journalists who blow the whistle on government wrongdoing.
Shortly after [...]

The American Conservative posted here my hit on Bush’s dictatorial signing statements.
Here’s the lead of the piece:
“For generations, Republican politicians have spoken reverently of the rule of law. But since 2001, this hoary doctrine has been redefined to mean little more than the enforcement of the secret thoughts of the commander in chief.
George W. Bush [...]

One of the best parts about radio or TV gigs is the thoughtful responses from people who may not exactly agree with everything I say.    Such feedback can be Deliberative Democracy at its best.

Another Rumsfeld Sham: “Truth will out.”

12:32 pm | Attention Deficit Democracy | Bovard | Bush | Comments: 0

“Ultimately the truth gets out, notwithstanding people’s efforts to the
contrary.”
Rumsfeld made that assertion at a press conference last week.
It almost makes you wonder if Rumsfeld has lost confidence in his ability to manage the world’s perceptions of the American military.
Unfortunately,  the notion that “truth will out” is one of the biggest fantasies in modern political thinking. [...]

Headline of the Year: “Do Hadithans Hate Us for Our Freedoms?”

12:44 pm | Attention Deficit Democracy | Bovard | Comments: 1

The above is the title of a new piece by Jacob Hornberger over at the Future of Freedom Foundation.  His piece very nicely skewers the Bush administration’s exploitation of freedom since 9/11.
And that is one triple-kegger headline.
